I think everyone is focused on the wrong lightsaber snafu. What I want to see is the lightsaber scene from A New Hope when Luke is on the Millenium Falcon with the training orb. If they corrected that, then it would be a huge improvement, IMHO.

We already know that Lucas has decided to retouch some lightsaber shots (e.g. the crossing in ROTJ) so isn't it safe to assume that however he decides to display Vader's saber is "correct"? He must know this is a huge point of contention, like the crossing in ROTJ.

With all due respect, Darth Vader's lightsaber is red

To put this to bed, the top pic is from 1977 as originally shown, bottom pic 2004 DVD. Clearly Adywan is right

I just find it disturbing that most amatures can do lightsaber effects on a home computer, there is no excues for the sabers in the OT to not match the PT. If this was the UOT the I would agree that the sabers should match the technicolor print of how they originally looked (and if that is pink then so be it). However we are talking about the 2011 Blu-ray/ Special Edition / whatever this version is called ... if they can animate the dewback to make them look more life like, they can match the lightsabers to make them look more real

God help us, this will be much, much worse than any pink lightsabre in high definition.

Just dreadful for a multi million pound film.
That in no way compares to the birds-nest in The Phantom Menace. I think they even mention how good it was in the making of book. It seems half of Ewan McGregor's performance was re-shoots. Ewan was probably contracted to appear within so many months of filming for pick-ups: they should have had his hair under contract as well.

You guys can't tell me that this is not an improvement over what the saber looked like in the 2004 dvd.

Yes, seriously. Some of us don't just blindly praise everything Lucas does and ingore the glaring screw ups and pretend that they are no big deal.

I would say the 2004 screenshot is pink or leaning towards it.
And your word is not enough with regards to the colour of the saber being red in the technicolour print.
You were not in baltimore(neither was I) to see that screening.

Why not take the 77/81' Technicolor print as the barometer for measuring what the original sabers looked like:
I explained about those tecnicolor screenshots and how the colour is incorrect here:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-mo...ml#post5068789

And also the 1997 versions were restored and colour corrected to match the technicolor prints, so why are the sabers red in those versions if they are pink in the technicolour prints? And wouldn't all the sith sabres in the prequels be pink if that's the colour they were originally supposed to be? No, they were always red.

Not only that but the screenshots we are both posting are from 2 different films. You can clearly see that the colour in the blu-ray trailer is even nothing like the technicolor photos you posted.

I cannot believe you guys are going on about this new trailer. Adywan, especially you should know better. The codec completely oversaturated in this video not to mention LO RES! And not one of you have even mentioned the lightsabers that cross in front of The Emperor in Jedi are now fixed.

Frankly I think this whole argument about Vader's lightsaber is silly. At this juncture no one knows what the correct coloring is supposed to be. There are so many screen grabs float around the internets that are photoshopped or a screen grabs from "corrected" fan versions.

All I know is my 1977 Darth Vader poster that I proudly displayed on my bedroom door for years looked like this:

And the top picture comes from? ---the special edition maybe---lol!
It definitely is not the technicolor print which is the authority with regards to this matter:

By the way the saber looks "more red" in the 2004 DVD than it does in the original:

Technicolor print on the left/2004 DVD on the right:

Hopefully, it's just the trailer. But there is no proof of that either, so don't need to judge us for that.

Not true. Although that fix could be the "completely oversaturated codec". Am I right?

The fix on the crossed sabers in front of the Emperor was mentioned shortly after the video was posted. That to me was the biggest sin, so I am thrilled they corrected it.

Sadly, they didn't get to fixing all the sabers, and really they should have. But I am going to live with the pinkish saber in Empire and get the full Saga as a sure thing now. I would have loved it to be the original 'angry red' color it used to be, as I always thought the color of Vader's saber was clearly an extension of his character. Giving him a pinkish saber is more "Hello there!" than "I want to destroy you!" Maybe its because of the low quality video feed (which is crazy, they should have the trailer up in HD, no?). But at it looks like there are just a few color issues to contend with and not a train wreck transfer like 04. Should be a good time in Sept.
