Kind of like the Tiny Elvis sketch from SNL. "Tiny Vader."

"What are you saying, Lucas? You think I'm cute?? How 'bout I cut off your head? How's that for cute?!"

you can just have the version from the 2004 dvd right?? why get all upset that it isn't on the BR set??

lucas would have just put it on as an SD feature anyways as evidence by the great zoetrope feature being in SD on the THX1138 Blu-ray-

i really miss the days of watching the movies on VHS with the bonus interviews that play after the movie-

the starwars and indiana jones late 90's releases gave great fun info in their featurettes (even if the info was nonsense)- i loved the indy 4 tease at the end of last crusade

Of course...I have all the DVD special feature discs....my point is that it would have been a nice touch to have a single Blu Ray disc in the set that had all the DVD special features on it...exactly like they did with the Alien Anthology. Then everyone could have retired their DVD's and the blu ray would be the 'all in one place' collection.
Now I have to keep hold of the four discs, which isn't a big issue by any means...but porting over DVD special features onto Blu in SD is something of the accepted industry standard.

Not on my planet. I know they stated back in 1997 that they minimized the transparent cockpits, but you could still see through them in the theater, and you could still see through them on the 2004 DVDs. And if your contrast and brightness are too high, you'll still see the black matte boxes around Tie Fighters and other spaceships, even though it was claimed these were fixed as well.

And for the last time, I'm not convinced any of the film footage in these trailers is actually from the Blu-Rays. Disney produces their trailers well in advance of release, and they almost never use the new transfer in their trailers (go look at the Blu-Ray "coming soon" trailers for Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, etc.) You guys were ecstatic that the Emperor's "slug" was gone in the Return of the Jedi crossed saber shot. It's still there in that shot. I'm hoping it will be removed for the Blu-Ray, but it was still there in that shot that got everyone so excited last week.

All of these flaws should not exist on the bd, but the marketing material we keep getting alludes to it being there. But the issues we are seeing are all from different sources are they not? The see through cockpits were eliminated back in '97, but the pink lightsabre emerges on '04. It looks like we are not getting a true picture of what the bd will look like until someone gets it and shoves it in their drive.

Only then, at the end will we understand!

The slug was most certainly removed or at least drastically reduced. The sabers look nothing like the DVD. All of the Phantom Menace footage is from a brand new transfer.

I could still see it - the snippet looks like the same shot from the 2004 DVDs, only with the contrast cranked up. And in frame grabs, the slug was still there, just minimized.

A couple of shots that are being fed out in response to massive fan upset that as we have seen can be improved by someone at home on a computer. I think the point is we have no real evidence either way until the discs come out and we can get an honest, true appraisal of the transfer. The phantom menace parts look good, but are they just old footage made 1080p as per the hi-def TV broadcasts, I am not sufficient enough in the technical aspects to have an opinion and have never seen them broadcast in HD.

Again, a lot of speculation will be immediately removed if we were in the know as to whether anything to this point has been BD footage or just cobbled together from other sources for marketing.

Just note we have seen nothing that will be evident as BD footage, such as digital Yoda in TPM or any other changes that have been made. We have just been fed stock footage to this point. Lets hope that changes in the coming weeks and we will know for sure, and then start the complaining about faults that are REALLY evident in this transfer.

Still there. Minimized, but still there. I'm still not convinced we've seen any actual Blu-Ray shots of the original trilogy in these trailers.

All evidence points to the fact that what they are showing us is the blu-ray footage. The clips on the official star wars youtube channel, that have the mini doc sample then the full clip after, are there to show off the blu-ray. All of the footage that we have seen of TPM is the complete new transfer. A few colour tweaks to the old DVD/ HDTV versions would not get the video to look anywhere near as sharp and as clean as they do. Plus the cropping is significantly less than the old versions.

All of the footage that we have seen from the OT in these mini clips will be from the blu-rays. These are being shown at events to promote the blu-ray and to show off how they will look. There is no way on earth that they would use old/ alternate footage to promote the blu-rays in this manor. The trailer, maybe using old footage, but again evidence points to blu-ray footage; crossed lightsabres and the "slug" fix, for example (even though they have only fixed a section of it and part is still visible.)

Here is the 2004 DVD/HDTV versions with brightness increased slightly:

As you can see the "slug" is really visible and nothing like the "fixed" shot in the trailer

Vader's lightsaber does have a slight reddish tint.

Oh and i agree i don't think these are actual shots of the finished product.

Thanks for the response, I bow to your knowledge on this. Still, we are talking about the same company that issued the '04 disaster, so I am hoping in vain that they have gone as far as to use upscaled footage and not BD source footage so far.

My editing program at home makes a pretty good job of making SD look HD and even more so when you chuck it up on You tube. The videos we are seeing could be BD footage, but being on youtube throws doubt in my mind. They could get away with it for marketing. The great unwashed have probably, and will probably never see any of this footage and still buy the product in droves. It is only the geeks and nerds of the star wars community such as ourselves who are spending our days trawling the internet for the next little tidbit of information. Lucasfilm knows this, and is probably toying with us to keep the debate alive knowing full well we will all be there day one, cash in hand to be slapped in the face if needs be again. The majority of sales will take place when this product is advertised in the break on the next series of 'X Factor', broadcast in SD to the general public who wouldn't know the difference anyway. Thats where the marketing budget will be, in the week of release. I preordered the complete saga back in the new year, and despite evidence this is looking poor, am still looking forward to getting it faults and all

Now comic con et al are a different matter, but to get any comments on that from informed people in the know is nigh on impossible, and they only showed a looped reel that happened to not have any of the contentious transfer issues present. A good tatic some would say to prevent letting the shoddy job out of the bag to prevent sales being impacted, or is it just they did not have the footage available and were given select cuts?

This could go round in circles for ages, thank the maker I only have to wait 25 days for the answer!

Nothing, and I mean nothing beats a good conspiracy theory to give you a blinding headache
