Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but while I was updating the latest covers and links, I noticed Amazon has some huge (44% to 60% off) discounts on the KLSC titles released January 4.

Thanks, Shell. This is a good deal if you just want one title, but with the seller’s shipping charges, it’s about the same as ordering directly from Kino if you meet their free shipping minimum. I’m planning on placing an order with Kino soon, so I’ll give them my business.

Curious how this seller got these new titles, though.

There would occasionally be huge discrepancies between theatrical and home video performance: Point of No Return did a disappointing $30m at the US boxoffice but was one of Warners biggest ever rental titles for a decade (not that it did WHV much good since it was released before revenue sharing with rental chains and was a more popular rental than retail title: market research showed it was a perennial girls night in/getting over a bad breakup rental) while many major back-catalog titles really struggled. In my time at WHV we'd always run the historic sales figures territory by territory to determine which titles were worth upgrading, be it special editions, widescreen remasters, genre promotions or new formats, and which territories there was no previous market demand for certain titles so wouldn't make local release slates, and the results could be very surprising. When I later worked on some projects at Paramount I was amazed at how low US numbers for units sold on some major backcatalog titles you'd have thought couldn't miss could be (some not even making it to triple figures annually) while comparatively obscure titles would consistently do great numbers.

I honestly think we can dismiss DVD sales or popularity when it comes to some of Paramount's choices. I mean, they're putting out Going Ape! which hasn't been seen since VHS. Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy is another that likely wasn't a big seller, but someone at Paramount felt it was worth releasing now.

I can't vouch for the seller (Your Treasurehunter) but they do combine shipping so a bigger order is more reasonably priced. I just ordered 11 for $94.84 shipped (+ tax):

(And I would have added My Little Chickadee if I weren't already planning to import the Indicator Mae West box set.)

Brother from another mother, maybe?

Some of those have BD releases, but they're imports, and not all US-friendly.

That tells me that both titles are so popular that people don’t want to part with their old VHS and DVD copies and/or any copies that turn up are snapped up immediately.

Fascinating post. By triple figures, do you mean less than 100 copies? If that’s the case, wow.

Yes, I do - in one case for a title that spawned a 10-page thread here a year or so ago and was successful enough in its day to spawn a sequel yet only managed to sell 96 copies on DVD in the US in its first year.

When was Soapdish released on Blu in the US (and how did I miss it)?

Daisy Miller is with Paramount, so off limits for the time being from KLSC.
