It's not. Plus with double features you are all but guranteed to get fairly barebones discs. No documentaries, limited number of commentaries, few if any deleted scenes, no tv or alternate cuts etc. I'll take a double feature when I have to, but when given the option give me singles any day of the week. (I would be fine with 2 films on 2 discs within a single case however... I can print my own covers and purchase my own cases.)

Bonus materials almost always depends on the film and who is willing to talk about the film. Sometimes it's like that. Its a lot easier to create extras for Escape from NY than it is for Reptilicus or The Neanderthal Man

The impact on picture quality with two 90 minute movies on a single disc is non-existent. Lack of features is the real loss, but I would guess these films would not have gotten features anyway.

I'm quite surprised they didn't do The Island as a double feature down to it's relative obscurity and complete lack of extras.

The amount of extras doesnt really determine if a movie is part of a double feature or not. The Island was released as a single like Universal did with their MOD of it

The Island was one of Scream's first releases and released before they started doing double feature releases. I think it was ultimately awesome enough to be released as a stand alone bare bones release since the movie was rescued from MOD DVD hell and released on Blu.

Have any of their Universal titles been part of double-feature sets? If not, individual releases might be a condition of their licensing agreement with the studio.

None yet. The Island and Death Valley were apparently supposed to be a DVD-only double, originally.

IIRC, someone at SF said that Universal doesn't want their titles in double features on Blu.

I'm looking forward to the The House Where Evil Dwells / Ghost Warrior [Double Feature] I don't remember house but I like the cast, Ghost is a good Charles band film and I don't need extra features just decent A.Q. V.Q.

***NEW TITLE ANNOUNCE!***

Let's get the 2016 party started with news of an upcoming release! The rare and somewhat forgotten 1972 Universal thriller YOU'LL LIKE MY MOTHER will be joining the Scream roster on blu-ray near Mother's Day. (Of course.) The film stars Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke Astin, Rosemary Murphy (To Kill a Mockingbird) and Richard Thomas (The Waltons).

No word on exact street date or if any extras will be planned but keep an eye out for updates later on in the winter.

Very interesting choice. I guess this means that more obscure Universal titles like The Boy Who Cried Werewolf and Burned at the Stake aren't off the table.

There aren't many Universal's horrors left unannounced, so I'd wager that Scream snagged all of them. That said, I'm not sure about Burned at the Stake. It seems really obscure.

I wonder if Scream got a hold on some deep catalogue titles such as Tarantula, This Island Earth, The Incredible Shrinking Man etc. I guess it all depends on whether Uni is interested on releasing them themselves.

Yeah it would be very interesting to see if they got hold of pre-70s Universal titles. Though I remember their response when someone asked if more 80s horror/sci-fi was coming next year:

Which, if literal, would seemingly rule out some of the 50s Universal sci-fi classics. As you say, you'd have to think Universal would want to release these themselves. But in any case Shout are in a position to exploit this arrangement, since they're one of a handful of US companies to have a deal with Universal, as we well know.

Yeah, a box set from Universal definitely seems likely. Something in the vein of Warner's 'Special Effects' box.

Never happen. Other than the Beast/Neanderthal Man double-feature, Brain that Wouldn't Die (which is '62 but B & W) , and House on Haunted Hill from the second Price box, Scream simply doesn't do 50's and/or black and white films.

Thank goodness they did Beast of Hollow Mountain. Never in a million years would I have thought that one would make it to blu-ray. Even with the Neanderthal Man boat anchor it's still my favorite release of SF.

Nothing new, but still official confirmation From Facebook:

Quote:
***OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT for THE BOY**
From Elijah Wood's SpectreVision and Chiller Films comes a disturbing new film exploring the birth of evil. We are proud to announce THE BOY is coming to Blu-ray & DVD on March 1st.
Synopsis: In the summer of 1989, nine-year-old Ted Henley (Jared Breeze, Cooties) and his father John (David Morse, True Detective, World War Z) are the proprietors of the Mt. Vista Motel, a crumbling resort buried in the mountains of the American West. Since Ted's mother left, John has drifted into despondency – leaving Ted to fend for himself. In this isolation, unchecked by the bounds of parenting, Ted's darker impulses begin to manifest. The arrival of a mysterious drifter, William Colby (Rainn Wilson, Cooties, The Office), captivates young Ted and the two form a unique friendship – setting the stage for Ted's final, unnerving metamorphosis.
