I just finished watching my Scream Factory Blu-ray of The Vampire.
![]() John Beal (The Firm, Amityville 3-D) plays a small town doctor who transforms into a murderous creature after accidentally taking a drug that was made in a nearby laboratory from the blood of vampire bats. The sexy Coleen Gray (Kiss of Death, Nightmare Alley, Red River, Hell's Five Hours, Kansas City Confidential, The Killing) plays a nurse who inevitably ends up being a potential prey, while Kenneth Tobey (The Thing from Another World, Airplane!) stars as a sheriff who pieces together the mystery while investigating the grisly results of the vampire's rampage. The Vampire was quite ahead of its time with its mixture of science fiction and classical vampire horror, and, although it may come across as quaint today, it still packs a punch during a few scenes. My favorite moment is when Gray's nurse character is being pursued on a dark street by the creature during the middle of the film. The vampire makeup is nothing spectacular, and, in fact, it looks as though the doctor simply has a lot of clay on his face, but the camerawork and the script overcome everything lacking with the special effects. This is a fun film across the board. This Scream Factory Blu-ray looks excellent, with a naturally filmic presentation, in the same way that the Scream disc of The Screaming Skull looks great. I'm really proud of what they are doing with these old-school horror movies, and I don't ever want them to stop. I make it a point to buy anything and everything with Coleen Gray, because she was always so gorgeous in her movies. Definitely one of my favorite 1950s babes. If you end up buying one of her movies on Blu-ray, then you will inevitably buy the rest of them as well. ![]() Last edited by The Great Owl; 05-06-2017 at 09:51 PM. |

I won't be able to watch and review I Bury the Living tonight, because I'm going to a Midnight Oil concert with some friends, but I'm looking forward to seeing it tomorrow afternoon.
I'm looking forward to more of the old-school movies from Scream, though. |

Just received and watched my copy of Lifeforce. First time watch and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. I think it's Hooper's most effective film after The Texas Chainsaw Massacre but in a much different way (even though I'm a big Funhouse fan). It was a lot of fun, had a good amount of genuine suspense and excitement and my God! Mathilda May! Absolutely stunning with her naked self. This was a really fun and crazy movie that I'm glad to have in my collection.

Heh, I feel like tons of modern films feel like Lifeforce. Up its own ass, huge and bloated with numerous script issues, but oh well get it out the door. Only difference is today it would be CGI that costs a hundred million and Mathilda May would be wearing a skin-tight outfit but no nudity, oh my god never any nudity!

I think Lifeforce's biggest problem is that it has a hell of a lot of really fun, out there ideas, but the final product is pretty blah in the sum of its parts.
The movie sounds genuinely awesome on paper, yes, but the actual product feels too restrained and timid for my liking. Spontaneous Combustion, on the other hand, goes all in with Brad Dourif's backstory and his Human Torch powers, plus it has a really wild scene with John Landis that really puts even the most ridiculous scenes in Lifeforce to shame. Even Chainsaw 2 (which I really love) is way more my speed than Lifeforce in the sheer lunacy department. |

This is off topic but for you blu-ray collectors with small children:
1. Do you watch horror films when your kids are at home? 2. Since small children throw and destroy things, do you tend to keep your disc collection out of your child's reach or do you let them see and touch them? |

Watched I Bury the Living today. I really enjoyed it. It runs a fairly brisk 76 minutes. A solid lead performance by Richard Boone and an interesting premise. A very good blind buy for me.
