No, it’s unreleated. Best Buy will still sell movies, but most of their inventory will be online only (like it is right now).

I have two Best Buy's within a 15 minute drive. One of them has like one row of movies now but the other still has about 10 rows. So thankfully I still have a store near me with a lot of options.

I see movies following the soundtrack cd market. Higher prices and low print runs, but still available if you know where to look. Companies will continue to offer them as long as it remains profitable. It also means that oop titles you can get cheaply today will command exorbitant prices in the future, especially considering the recent nonsense of digital providers removing 'purchased' titles from customer accounts. These truly are the 'good ol' days' and anyone who cares about film should be scrambling to build their personal libraries while the gettin's still good.

The Best Buy near me still has a large physical media section, with one whole row devoted to 4K UHD, and then other sections for horror, TV, action, children, etc. I get that some Best Buy's are voiding out their movie sections, but physical media is still in high demand; it's just primarily online these days. Just because a few Best Buys are dumping it doesn't mean anything. It just means Average Joe Public in the area isn't buying them. Keep in mind there is still a very high market for this stuff. Don't believe the streaming services telling you they are the future. They want to be the future, but just because they want it doesn't make it so. The physical copies will be around for quite a while yet.

The best buys here have cut their store sizes in half and moved the movies to the back corner.

This sums up exactly how I feel as well. With 4k Becoming more popular I expect at least another 10 years or more of the physical collecting. I also have a feeling the studios will capitalize more on catalog tiles by doing a more thorough restoration process and releasing some of the bigger more popular titles again on 4k. What we're seeing now is just the start imo.

For what it's worth this is exactly the layout my Best Buy had up until this week. I'm hoping that this is just a regional problem which is more or less isolated to myself, but time will tell I suppose.

Best Buy lowering what they carry in store has a LOT more to do with Amazon and online shopping in general than it does the death of physical media. No one says clothes and tools are going extinct because of Sears going out of business.

But every store that sells clothes and tools aren’t carrying a small fraction of the inventory that they once did 10 years ago.

We collectors on this forum are living in a bubble. Most people are content just watching whatever is on Netflix/Hulu/Prime/Youtube/cable.

And I would say the overwhelming majority of these concerns stay in this bubble, which makes it more difficult.

Even average people seem to go crazy physical media wise during Black Friday and Christmas. Also streaming revenue isn`t anywhere near that of physical media yet.
Look at how much labels like Shout Factory are putting out recently. Or new labels like MVD.
There still seems to be quite a big collectors market bubble or not.

It sucks that Best Buy is lowering it's digital media stock. My Best Buy moved from a big section in the front of the store, to a little corner in the back. Not a big fan of ordering Blu's online ever since I ordered "Child's Play" the slip was pretty mangled when it came in and the case wouldn't completely close.

Yes most people are, but most people just rented VHS and DVD too. Buying lots of movies has always been a niche hobby. While the numbers might be slowly lowering since the DVD boom, the height of purchases, that doesn't equal death. And more to the point, again, the fact Best Buy is lowering stock in some locations has MUCH more to do with online shopping than anything else. It's old thinking to assume store stock is indicative of anything.

I also see local Barnes and Noble stores slowly whittling down their DVD and BD inventory. Of course, they're doing that with books as well.

My closest Barnes & Noble has never even had a movie/music section. They have a small rack of the latest big releases behind the counter but no separate section like some other locations.

Even FYE is now 75% vinyl pop and memorabilia. I used to spend hours and hours browsing CD's now it's two aisles.
