Default Purchasing region free / region C blu's

Hi, Ive got a PS3 which is a Region C player. The trouble is.... There arent a lot of titles available here (Mumbai). Ive been looking for Apocalypto, Cast away etc etc...i've even purchased them frm the States, unfortunately they were region A and wudnt play. I knw that these titles do come 'region free' but sadly, unless im mistaken, arent availabe anywhere in Mumbai. Is there ANY place i can find good blu's here ????? If not how else can i purchase them...?

If I were u, this is what I would do, I would buy a Region A blu ray player which costs somewhere between 125$ to 200$ (Panny BD60). I would buy a step down transformer to play the BD player. Amazon ships BD's to India and you would get some great deals (way cheaper than MSRP in India) and wide selections. Additionally, all Bollywood and Kollywood BD's are Region free.

He was talking about American films though.

Dean, if you looked at the site I gave you, it states that Apocalypto's Australian release is Region All and there is nothing on Cast Away, I'm afraid.

Yeah, the Region C area is lacking on it. They have Russian Blu-Rays listed on it. Region C is going to be the redheaded step child of Blu-Ray just like how Region 5 is for DVDs.

Yes, http://bluray.liesinc.net is a good site. I think it is reliable as well.

It is nice if Indian disks are added to it. All Indian blu-rays (released so far) are all-region apart from Jodhaa Albar which is Reg B locked.

Default Should I buy blu-ray player in India or in US?

I am trying to buy a PS3 that can act as a blu-ray player. I have a choice - to buy in US or in India. I understand that the Indian one will be Region C coded and the US one will be Region A coded (please correct me if this is not right).

I am considering the following criteria to make a decision -
(1) Power support: US bought PS3 will have to be used with a step down transformer in India. Are there any long term problems with using this setup?
(2) Region support: I want to play all the Hollywood blockbusters and Bollywood blockbusters (blu-rays).
(2.a) I gather from this forum that most of the Bollywood blu-rays are going to be region-free. So no problem with either the Indian or the US console/player. Am I right making this assumption?
(2.b) Not all of the Hollywood blu-rays are yet available in India. If they are, what region are they of? If they are not, the only option is to get them from US. Would I be able to play blu-rays purchased both in India (Region C or free) and US (Region A or free) on the PS3/blu-ray player bought in India (Region C) or US (Region A)?

Please advise me on the best possible option. Thanks!

Hi Dean,

I too live in Mumbai and face the same problem that you do. First of all I seriously doubt BDP- S350 is a region free player. As per my knowledge none of the majors have launched a Region Free player as yet. Secondly blu-rays are quite easily available at shops like Rhythm House in Mumbai though you will not find all titles. All blu ray discs sold in India are Region Free. The best option still remains to import from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk. If you browse through the forums ( and also bluray.liesinc.net) you will find that most of the US major studios ( Paramount, Warner, Universal etc) release region free blu rays. In addition most of the Fox blu rays which are region locked in US are released region free in UK. So take heart. I also had the same problem as you initially but presently own more than 200+ blu rays . Happy collecting

Supposedly, the Super-Blu player, which is expensive, is Region All. Also, I saw a Region All Blu-Ray player on HKFlix for $370 + Shipping.

1) Not heard of any problems so far as long as you buy a decent step down transformer.
2) The US PS3 will be a strict Region A player. It will play Region ALL (Region free) or Region A BDs. You will be better off with a REGION A player because studios in US for the most part will not release REGION C locked Hollywood blu rays because there is not much money to be made in India and China market as the response to 1080p material in this region has been disappointing. So it does not make sense to region lock it from a business perspective.
2a) All Indian BD's except Jodhaa Akbar are Region free. All future releases should be Region free because there is not much demand for BD's in India. Indians are more interested in watching ripped bad quality VCDs. This scenario might change in the near future once the next generation plasma and LCD TV's penetrate into the Indian market and HD content is more freely available.
2b) The Hollywood blu rays available in India should be Region free, either UK or US import. The chinese import might be Region C locked.
Your last sentence is confusing - but I will give it a try - If you were to buy a PS3 in India, it will be region C locked and can play both REGION free BDs and REGION C BDs - WILL NOT PLAY REGION A & REGION B BD's, PERIOD. If you were to buy a PS3 from US, it will be REGION A locked and will play both REGION free BDs and REGION A BDs - WILL NOT PLAY REGION B and REGION C BDs. Hope this answer helps!

Just make sure your step-down transformer can pump sufficient power for the PS3 - then you will be okay. If you can get an over-rated and good quality transformer, it would work for years without problems. Don't get an under-rated cheap transformer which would over-heat and could breakdown quickly. That type also could make PS3 malfunction.

Thank you so much Kailashu and syncguy! I wanted someone (who has been there before me) to back my proposition. I got my answer. Any ideas if we get ready-to-use decent step-down transformers in India? Does Staples have one?

In Chennai, Richie street is a great place to buy some quality transformers. In US I usually buy from this website:

http://www.voltage-converter-transfo...ansformer.html

PS: Buy a min. 1000 watt transformer. Will be useful for future additions.
