Default Whats the best reciever for Surround sound with HDMI 1.3?

I have been interested in upgrading my Phillips sourround sound for sometime. (Its about 5 or 7 years old but it still rocks.) But with the wave of HDMI 1.3 and my PS3 supporting that I was wondering what recievers actually have that built in? I have see some that have the HDMI in and out but which ones are HDMI 1.3? Its very hard to know since they seem to hide that information. If someone could point me to a very nice reciever thats no more than 700 or so that would be great. I want to hear what Dolby Digital HD sounds like. Also what speakers would be the best choice with the reciever as well? A all in one packaged deal would be best but they never seem to have the bells and whistles as the stand alone recievers. Thank you.

I second that Onkyo. I have the new 605 as well. MSRP is $599 I think. you can find it at most stores for around $500. JRs had it for $400. Fantastic. I know someone who spent more for the next one up, the new 805 and he loves it. He wanted the THX certification that is not on the 605. Wasn't worth the extra money for me. MSRP is $1099 on that one I think. Ugh.

The 605 is great, my friend bought that after I bought the 805. The only thing i don't like is the ps3 hdmi audio...all you see is 'multichannel' even if u choose true hd on the disc.

I get that on my 604 all the time too, I have to switch to bitstream when we watch a DVD then I switch to Linear PCM when we watch Blu, it drives me nuts!

That's because the PS3 is decoding the TrueHD and spitting it out as multi-channel PCM. At this time, it doesn't have the ability to bitstream the next-gen audio formats via HDMI (it's speculated that it may never be able to, but that's not a problem as long as there's the possibility of it being decoded within the PS3).

I heard that the Onkyos hdmi 1.3 receivers have a very slight audio delay causing a lip synch issue. Also heard some people get an occasional popping sound on their speakers.

Default Speaker popping issue with Onkyo 605

For those who are considering the onkyo 605, just beware of the speaker popping issue with this particular model and the onkyo 805. I got one from J&R and had to return it because of the popping issue.

I have the Onkyo 605 as well. I hear a lot of popping while watching DirecTV via HDMI but I don't hear popping with my PS3. I am using a cheap HDMI cable with my sat and a Monster M1000 for my PS3. I thought it was the cable. So it is the receiver? Should I exchange the receiver?

I haven't had any popping issues with my 605 and a coworker hasn't had any issues with his 805. The 805 is THX, has an extra HDMI or two, and can do some other stuff I really didn't think justified the extra money (I think it is technically twice as much as the 605).

People have been arguing up and down about the whole transferring/decoding via HDMI blah, blah, blah. Whatever the PS3 and 605 are doing, it is FANTASTIC. I changed out my optical only Pioneer for this 605 and the difference was amazing. Well worth every penny.

I haven't had any lip sync issues from my 605. I did have lip sync issues from my TV, when I had it on surround. The TV tried to convert the standard sound to surround and it was off by a bit, so I simply turned the surround converter off. No more lip sync.

I just got the Pioneer Elite VSX-91TXH . . . I like it so far. I just got it on Sunday, and then my lady had to go in the hospital (which is where I currently sit), so I haven't gotten to play with it TOO much, but it passes 1080p perfectly, unlike my HK AVR 247. Transporter in standard DTS sounded pretty darn good as well, as did the PCM snippet of Casino Royale I listened to.
