No. Although, this film seems to be literally changing people's lives. Call it what you want...like it or hate it...people are giving this film power and are paying lots of money to go see it.

I went to it yesterday with my 13 year old cousin and the theater wasn't even half full, and it wasn't a huge theater either. It was also playing on another screen so that might have explained why the theater wasn't very full, but I would have expected more people at the movie on Thanksgiving day. Interestingly, The Blind Side was playing in the biggest theater and it sold out 20 minutes before show time, so it wasn't like people weren't going to the movies.

I would guess the movie makes around $55 million for the 5 day weekend. It will get a lot of repeat business from the teenage girls. My cousin had already seen it once and most of her friends had seen it multiple times, and she saw the first Twilight movie 6 times in the theater, which she said was about the average of her friends.

What's people's fascination with seeing this film "fail" as the weeks go by?

It will not fail, it is a huge financial sucess for whatever reason. But the New Moon fanboys that were claiming it would overtake TDK's financial prowess will have to reassess their stance.

I don't remember anyone here actually saying it will pass TDK actually. Besides, The Blind Side only passed up New Moon one day last week I think. Either way, it doesn't really matter. They are both pretty big successes in their own rights and I am happy to see both do well.

Yes, it was a threadcrap. It wasn't needed, it wasn't funny, and it's also not true. That could be a problem....

No, it wasn't a threadcap. Yes, it was funny (more specifically if you don't hold the material of the books and film as religious dogma). And, by sheer semantics, it IS true. A teenage girl is struggling with her romantic feelings for a wolf boy and a dead boy. Because one is a wolf boy, that would be conducive to a beastiality riddled relationship in the future. Because the other is a dead boy, that would be conducive to a necrophelia riddled relationship in the future.

I just call it as I see it!

It'll probably end up with $280-$290 million. Basically, it made half it's gross in its opening weekend. So much for this being the next Dark Knight, like many thought. I reckon the next film will make about $200-$250 million. Six months of time is not enough to build a larger audience. Look at Back to the Future 3, or Matrix Revolutions. One year is the minimum for franchise pictures.

I don't think anyone thought it would rival the dark knight or even go into the 400 million range. And why are you assuming what the next one will make as you have no idea. What if it pulled a Pirates 2?

There were those who saw the opening weekend numbers and thought it would pull in $400 million or more. I think I even read an article about it.

Pirates 2 was released 3 years after the first film. It built a large audience on DVD from a very successful theatrical run. Pirates 3 was following up the very financially successful Dead Man's Chest, but the film wasn't as well received, so it needed more time to gestate and build a larger audience. When making a franchise film, you have to assume that roughly half the people that are seeing an installment either won't like this one or won't see the next one, so you need time to build an audience on home video that wants to see the next film. There has to be room to breathe. Matrix Revolutions and Back to the Future suffered from not having any room between their predecessors, for instance. If you had released those movies 6 months later giving a full year between films, they would have been more successful. Reloaded was only out for about 3 weeks on DVD before Revolutions hit theaters. There was no time for a large amount of people to see Reloaded, enjoy it, and get excited about seeing the third. By the time Reloaded had gained momentum on home video, Revolutions was already exiting theaters.

I enjoy the story in the series, but I don't hold the material as religious dogma. You can say it was funny until you can't type anymore, but that doesn't mean it was funny. I'm not the only one that thinks so because I'm not the only one that has commented on it. Also, the whole necrophelia and beastiality thing is not true. You can try to prove that until you can't type anymore too, but it doesn't make you right. Both are basically a fetish, and you don't see her walking around having sex with a bunch of vampires and werewolves or getting aroused by them. It just so happens that the two people she loves the most besides her parents are those two things, which she finds out after she is already in love with them. I'm glad I could have such a mature conversation. I feel better now.

Oh... get over yourself killowertz! Every human being on the planet has laughed at a joke that uses situational correlation as a technicallity. Everyone that I mention the TWILIGHT + beastiality + necrophelia JOKE to in real life laughs their ass off! Obviously I'm not implying that the main character has these fetishes within the context of the material. However, it's not a far step from the truth. And, that makes it funny. The best stand up comedy focuses on truthful observations. Robin Williams and George Carlin are brilliant examples of the truth being ludicrously funny!

Don't take life so seriously. Step back and let yourself see things from a different perspective. You may not necessarily agree with the new perspectives that you discover. But, at least you can get a laugh out of some of them.

Also, I will openly trash the films and books for what they are; pure nonsense. However, I never have nor will I ever criticize a person for liking them. I will always direct my negative opinions to the material, not its audience. Hell, there are plenty of films/books that I enjoy thoroughly that others believe are rubbish. So, in that regard, I treat others the way I want to be treated. I'm very open to hearing people criticize those films/books. In fact, I often get enjoyment out of hearing differing perspectives. But, if they say that I am defective in some way for enjoying them? Well, that's when I point out that they might want to think about what they are doing.
