Picture Setting Adjustments While Watching BDs?

I'm interested in how many folks actually try to tweak the picture if something doesn't look right to you. I understand all BDs aren't created equally and it may very well be the director's intent as to the look but sometimes it may cause a distraction in your enjoyment of watching.

Some scenarios and what you may do if anything:

1) When the picture appears very soft.

2) When the picture looks too dark.

3) When faces in general look very pale.

4) Some colors are tinted to access to the point of being pushed.

Please add other scenarios and what you do, again if anything. Thanks much!

Edit: And yes, my display is calibrated in case you weren't certain of that.

My set is calibrated, and I don't adjust the TV as I watch anything. That's about as close as I'm going to get to the real thing, so no need to mess with settings.

Keep in mind that, like you said, not all Blus are created equal. Basically, not all handling of transfers are created equal. Some companies apply digital noise reduction, some don't. Etc.

How about the picture setting adjustments on a BD player? Some players have a rather extensive selection to tweak the picture. The LG BD390 I own is loaded with a wide range of changes that can be made within an option from - to +.

And I'm sure manufacturers feel the need to have at least some options available to the viewer who bought their product even with the display calibrated. Your yourself mentioned some companies applying DNR for instance and player manufacturers know that as well.

Heck some folks are so good at adjustments they insist they can take a budget player and get it close to a much higher quality unit on the market!

I have a PS3 Slim, and the picture settings I've set are necessary to produce the best picture for all movies, games, etc.

I've never had a Blu-ray player that had picture settings comparable to a TV, as in contrast, brightness, etc., etc. So I can't speak to that.

I've never touched a setting on my OPPO BDP-83 when watching a blu-ray. Left it to total factory settings or what was recommended by long-time OPPO owners. Everything I've ever read says not to, that you should adjust the display. I've had all three of my displays over the years ISF calibrated and never once changed a setting. Of course, my main reason for getting into HT was because I love movies and have totally controlled lighting in my home theater set-up and that's how I had the calibrator set my displays. I do tweak a bit when watching HD channels depending on the picture. usually knock the brightness down a bit.
