Those settings are WAY TOO DARK. No offense, I'm asking those who own a XBR9 that can test the setting so they can tell me how they look to them.

while i don't own that tv, i know that is a really nice highly advanced HDTV and i think at that dollar amount that you spent, if it were me, i'd pay the 300+ to have it professionally calibrated. i know that set cost you some coin, so i'm just saying...

oh yeah, really nice tv! i love sony tv's!

That's what I'm going to probably end up doing. All this different calibrations are going to drive me mad. Once my financial situation improves, it'll be easier to do. For now, I want to see what my fellow XBR9 owners settings are (to compare notes, test out their settings and they'll test out mine and give feedback).

I have an XBR9 as well. I hired someone to calibrate my television for me. The settings from Tweak TV and Home Theater Magazine are the best. The latter being my real preference but I saw a dramatic change after I hired a calibrator.

Those settings are just way too dark and look bland. Mind sharing the settings that the calibrator put on yours?

they look dark because the settings you're using are WAYYYYYYY off. If you were to have a professional calibrate your tv, then that is what it would like. The setting I gave you were FROM a professional calbrators website.

Edit: I saw you have almost 2000 posts here.... how could you not already know the correct settings for your tv ???

Maybe because I never needed to do any calibrating until now and I just recently bought this tv?

I have a 52" xbr9 that a friend of mine calibrated who used to work @ Circuit City. One thing though, I thought the tv was calibrated to the room that it was in and not to settings from other people, am I right on that?

I just compared TweakTv's settings with those of Home Theater Mags settings and personally I prefer Cnets settings for my tv over both of them. Now that I landed my old job back I am gonna go with the professional Calibration route. I know it may run me $300 or so but I am sure it will be worth it. Just wanna get the best out of my tv and I feel this really is the only way to go.

That's what I'm going to end up doing because this calibration thing is driving me nuts.

I'm telling ya, you'll be fine with the settings on other websites like Cnet or TweakTV!

I personally like Cnet's settings more than TweakTVs, but to each his own.

Here is Cnet's review, i'm sure that there will be suggested settings somewhere on it

http://reviews.cnet.com/2300-6482_7-...s=0&o=10000834

But it does sound like you are leaning more towards a pro calibration, which i'm sure in the end you'll be happy with. Just know that when some people get a calibration done, they do complain because they think the picture looks "dull" or "washed out."

That's what the settings from cnet and tweaktv do. Also, they probably didn't go to the right people.

Wingman,

Before making any suggestions I need to know which kind of programming you are looking for.. we can have different seetings per source (blu-ray, games, sports, cabe tv, dvd, ...) and inputs (hdmi, component,...).

I calibrated my XBR9 (Brazilian Model) using a colorimeter. Have some kind of experience on this subject.

So.. tell me what is your purpose.

Anyway this is my settings for 1080p/24p (blu-ray movies)

HDMI using BD player Panasonic BD60 darkened room with LED Bias behind tv.

Scene Mode: Cinema
Backlight: 5 (36 FTL of luminance, between range of 30-40FTL)
Picture: 90
Brightness: 52 (51 is the correct one, but increasing one notch makes shadow detail better if using ACE)
Color: 51 (works from 49 up to 53)
Hue: G1 (or 0)
Color Temperature: Warm1 (or Warm2 if RGB = 0 for all)
Sharpness: Minimum (up to 3 works well, too)
Noise Reduction: Off
MPEG Noise Reduction: Off
MotionFlow: Off (Alternative: Standard to reduce 24p judder, if you don't like)
CineMotion: Off (pulldown 10:10 for 24p sources).

--- Advanced Settings menu ---

Black Corrector: Off
Advanced C.E.: Low (increases black level - 0.03cd/m2-. Alternative:Off - if you don't like backlight fluctuations or want to make linear Gamma curve)
Gamma: 0
Auto Light Limiter: Off
Clear White: Off
Wide Color: Standard
Live Color: Off

RGB (White Balance) * very specific for my unit * Alternative: 0 for all (default)
R Gain:0
G Gain: -15
B Gain: -20
R Bias: 0
G Bias: 0
B Bias: -4

--- Eco menu ---
Economia de Energia: Low (Nightime) Off (Daytime)
Sensor Luz: Off

I've put these settings that you have recommended for both the cable and ps3/blu-ray. I'll give it a day to see how it works out.

UPDATE: I changed it back to how I have it because the blues look faded.

Sorry for bumping a ancient thread but I tried the cnet setting (even though it's for the 52 inch version but it will work fine for the 46 inch version:

-- Setup, Picture adjustments menu:
Picture Mode: Cinema
Backlight: 2
Picture: 87
Brightness: 52
Color: 48
Hue: 0
Color Temperature: Warm2 (I used cool here and it give the colors a bit more pop)
Sharpness: 0
Noise Reduction: Off
MPEG Noise Reduction: Off
MotionFlow: Off
CineMotion: Auto 1

Advanced Settings menu:
Black Corrector: Off
Advanced C.E.: Off
Gamma: 2
Auto Light Limiter: Off
Clear White: Off
Wide Color: Standard
Live Color: Off [grayed out]

White Balance menu:
R-Gain: -4
G-Gain: -13
B-Gain: -11
R-Bias: 0
G-Bias: 0
B-Bias: -1

--- Screen menu
Wide Mode: Full
Auto Wide: Off
4:3 Default: Off [grayed out]
Auto Display Area: Off
Display Area: Full Pixel
Screen Position: [grayed out]
Vertical Size: 0 [grayed out]

--Preferences, Eco menu
Power Saving: Off
Light Senor: Off

My recommendation is to watch tv in the dark and the difference is huge (even though this would be common sense). The black levels have improved hugely.
