Default Remembering Donnie Brasco

The 90's was a huge decade for gangster flicks. Good Fellas, Casino, Carlito's Way, and the often forgotten, Donnie Brasco starring Johnny Depp and Al Pacino.

I gained a new appreciation for this film after watching it again. The final scene where Pacino takes off his jewelry and calmly goes to his fate was so quiet and powerful. Johnny Depp is amazing. Just his facial reactions alone when he first talks to Pacino told the story of man who is playing a role. Depp literally played an actor who was playing as an actor.

Donnie had to act and behave like a mobster while living with the constant fear of being discovered. Great movie and highly recommended!

Yeah one of the best blind buys I've ever made and featured a performance by Depp that may actually be better than his one as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Donnie Brasco is on par with the greatest gangster films ever made! Yes, Lefty's acceptance of his fate at the end of the film was tragic and perfectly scripted and executed. Love Donnie Brasco!

Did you get paid or was it for free? I can't imagine behind an extra is very thrilling. From what I've seen on dvd documentaries, it appears that the actual film making process is very tedious and boring.

I agree all around. A very overlooked mafia movie. Pacino & Depp in the same movie, is a win-win situation! Solid acting from the supporting cast too, like Michael Marsden.

IMO, Donnie Brasco is Depp's best movie as agent Joe Pistone. Great mafia themed movie with characters that show they're not invulnerable, but have weak spots as shown in Pacino's performance as Lefty too. The best theme was Lefty trying to get out of the mob and live on a boat where no one could find him, and undercover Agent Pistone/Brasco, trying to help him get there...

Speaking of Donnie Brasco, Anne Heche, who played Pistone/Donnie's wife in the film and did a nice job in the role, is said to not be expected to survive her car crash into a home, where apparently she was intoxicated on something when she crashed at high speeds through a neighborhood. Luckily no one in the home was injured, but the home is destroyed. She suffered critical injuries from her choices.

It's good movie, and Depp is great. But it's so far below films like Goodfellas that it's almost disrespectful to compare em

The only good thing about this movie was Anne Heche RIP and Dakota Johnson.

Very different styles to those two types of films. One is more epic over the lifespan, while this one is a smaller, more personal story about Lefty's tragic, self-inflicted life.

A classic film, agreed.
I saw it in theaters way back in 1996 or so when it first released and bought the DVD as soon as it was available. 4K would look nice no doubt.

Thanks. I was wondering what the update was.

Unfortunately, Anne Heche died from her reported self-inflicted car injuries at 53. Sad situation. High rate of speed through a neighborhood street, narcotics detected in her system, burning crash, destroyed the home also.

Can someone please explain Al Pacino's (Lefty) fate in the end? He grabs the gun and then we hear numerous gunshots. But it's not confirmed in the film that he dies. So what actually happens to him?
