Default Calibration for 3.1 home theater system...

Okay I have a full 5.1 system but due to limited spacing I think I'm going to have to fall back to a 3.1 system. I have a Sony ES2400 receiver. It has the calibration mic. My question is what happens to surround channel in 3.1 system. I will have PS3 set to bitstream over HDMI. Do I still get Dolby True HD and DTS HD audio?

Don't have speakers hooked up at the moment. Having my TV that was wall mounted moved due to furniture configuration being rearranged. Getting a desk for my living room and the apartment living room is small....

Thanks for any assistance...

I think you just get the 3.1 and you don't hear the surrounds. If you bitstream you still get dolby truehd and dts hd ma whether you have surrounds or not.

Sean to the rescue. Thanks for the info. I'll see how it goes. Getting a new cabinet for my A/V equipment. If I can squeeze the surrounds in somehow I will. Thursday can't get here fast enough to get the new cabinet in and my speakers back up. My brothers are getting the current cabinet. Went ahead and got everything out so they can pick it up.

Some receivers might incorporate the surrounds into the front 3 speakers in 3.1 but I seriously doubt that and I don't know why it would be done. It would defeat the purpose of surround sound. Just get surrounds to the left/right of your couch on a stand. I had 7.1 in my bedroom so you can have 5.1 in yours.

The end table by the couch move that over a little bit. Get a couple of speaker stands and put them to the l/r of the couch for surround sound speakers. Or wall mount them. Could you do the in-ceiling surround speakers? That is always an option.

Most receivers will do this. If you set your rears and surrounds to none it'll pump the audio out the fronts. I know you think that might we weird, but it would be even stranger not to have the sound at all. It's really no different then watching a movie in stereo, it's not bad. So little of the audio is pumped through the surrounds that if you had to lose a speaker I'd kill them before anything else.

I was wondering if some of the surround sound went thru the fronts. Obviously it doesn't have the same effect as actually having the surrounds. I did know that about watching movies in stereo. Thanks for clearing that up.
