Based on this PS3 number, Sony is selling approximately 400k PS3 per month. Sony said it sold 4.58 millions by 6/30. So the total PS3 sold by now should be around 5.2 millions. The number should be accelerated greatly in the coming two months with the releasing of 30+ PS3 games and 60+ Blu-ray movies.

Woohoo!

The industry needs to get firmly behind one format. No room for two.

As much as I love Blu-ray and know that it is a truely better format than H-DUD i wonder if we would be fighting a losing battle if it were not for PS3. Either way here's to PS3 bringing in Blu-ray as the winner.

I agree. The PS3 has helped to make the format war a shorter war than it could've been.

Not bad for an "overpriced trojan horse"

Jim Lynch of ExtremeTech can simply get stuffed

hardly. for $600, the ps3 is a bargain. i wholeheartedly mean that. the perception that it's a game machine only is what makes that $600 seem high.

the ps3 is better described as a fairly high-end PC that is only hamstrung by the inability to upgrade the ram. otherwise, it's one hell of a pc.

I think there's no doubt of that. If not for the PS3, HD-DVD would have a very strong shot at total victory. The current software numbers would likely still favor HD-DVD. Warner and Paramount likely wouldn't have gone neutral. And nobody would be predicting the end of the format war by Q1/08.

You gotta hand it to Sony... including Blu-ray in the PS3 worked out about as well as they possibly could have hoped.

Default Ds?

What the heck is up with the DS? I really don't get the appeal of it, although of course I haven't tried it.

I'm not convinced that HD-DVD would be winning without the PS3. The fact is that the PS3 has muddied up the waters.

How many people who own PS3s do so simply because it is Blu-Ray? If the PS3 did not exist, everyone of those people would own a standalone Blu-Ray player.

This is my biggest problem with HD-DVDers trying to make things look good for themselves. They include all PS3 sales when it suits. They ignore all PS3 sales when it suits. Both are useless in the discussion, what matters is the number of owners who would actually use Blu-Ray. Nobody has those statistics. A good start really would be to look at just how many people bought the PS3 blu-ray remote.

Using a sports analogy, if you look at just about any NBA championship team you can say, "If they didn't have their best player, they probably wouldn't have won the championship." We're seeing much the same tactic from some HD DVD fans. If they lose they'll be able to point to the PS3 as one of the major reasons, if not the biggest reason. But it will still be a loss. Kind of like if one NBA team owner was more committed to winning and brought in a top player, while the other teams owner didn't, but got somebody who was good, but would only play part time. Kind of like Sony with the PS3 committing to including Blu-ray as standard and Microsoft only going with the optional HD DVD add-on for the XBOX360.
