Default Interesting news on HD DVD sales number

On engadgethd, they posted the number of Xbox HD DVD add ons sold at the moment the 750k number was anounced.
http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/12/18...s-269000-sold/
And with just a little math, it's a great lol moment.

750k total units sold (Add on + standalones)

-269.000 (add ons)

= 481.000 standalones

Less than 500k, right after the firesales, which reportedly sold 90k standalones.

-90.000
= 390k standalones, right around where the Blu Ray standalones were at the time (I think I've read a number around 360 or 370k BR standalones back then).
Now BR, around that 750k anounce, the number of BR player is -I am fairly confident- right around 400k or above (rising now with the new $299 players).

so, with all those firesales, all they could manage is 480k vs 400k? a 54 / 46 lead?
LMAO

Look at that lead shrink now

P.S: also, remember that for the longest time the Add-on was sold at $170 with a free Heroes HD DVD season 1 set
That also puts things in perspective (and a lot of people reselling their add-on online)

that is a really good point. Glad you noticed that.
They had to drop their players to almost free just to get ahead of Blu-ray!

Without the format war none of these prices would be possible. And since the war is fairly lopsided, we have to thank HD DVD for lowering their prices so BD prices would lower.

Can you imagine if there was no HD-DVD?
How much a BR Player would cost? Way more than 300 I can guarantee that!
There would be no BOGOs(booo), movies would be pricey to buy.

For all the complaining that is done against HD DVD, you have to thank it I think at this point. No HD DVD, no competition, no consumer perks!

Well, pricing at the entry level may be changing but the upper end of the market will remain pricey. A Denon or a Marantz player is still going to be in the thousands of dollars. Yes, the war is helping prices short term, but the only way to see true price reduction across the board for software & hardware is mass adoption of a single format so production costs go down.

Agreed, this is all great assuming the war is lop-sided of course.

True but I also personally know a lot of people who will not commit to High Def until there is a clear winner

I know folks are going (and have gone) broke buying into BOGOs and B2G1s, but I think we all have secretly suspected that--as soon as Warner goes Blu exclusive--and especially if Universal and then Paramount go neutral because of market pressure to supply the most popular Hi Def format around, these great sales are likely to go away--at least until Blu starts to compete directly against SD and captures a much bigger market share.

That's why I've spent like there's no tomorrow. Because we likely won't see sale prices like these after the first of the year for some time to come.

the thing is that if the ps3 wasnt such a damn good blu ray player, the blu ray stand alone sales would be killing the hd dvd stand alone's but like i said, the ps3 is such a great blu ray player that alot of people are getting a ps3 instead of a stand alone

very true as well but i don't think that's far off...

and really, when you go into BlockB'er or wherever and see a few HD DVD compared to a ton of BR... it tells the customer something.

Good points and, of course, HD DVD launched earlier than Blu-ray. When that's considered in addition to the 90K firesale, it puts things into perspective.

All of this talk about HD DVD selling so many more standalones is just FUD when you view the situation in the proper context.

At my local Costco a few days ago they had about 20 HD-DVD players and about 20 Sony Blu-ray players. Yesterday only one HD-DVD player was sold and about 15 Blu-ray players was sold. 15 to 1 sounds pretty good to me. (Blu-ray was selling at $279 and HD-DVD was selling at $199.)

Reality Check for HD DVDers...

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1490

Bottom line: 500,000, 600,000, 700,000 standalones, whatever the number is vs. BD standalones of a 1/2 million...is totally insignificant. It's nothing more than the last bastion of hope/FUD (of the hopeless HD DVDers) that Warner will somehow feel a couple hundred thousand lead in standalones is significant enough to make them go HD DVD.

It's proposterous desperation at its best. I've been saying for a few weeks, expect the BDA to come out firing with major hardware at CES. All of the studios have to have some sort of idea what is coming down the pike as far as BD standalones, features and price. What's toshiba going to do? Lower prices?

But hey, lets let the idiot HD DVDers continue to hold their weinies over a few hundred thousand SAL player lead...the rude awakening is coming, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Good observation. I noticed no movement in HD-DVD player at Costco when they were $169.00 and the BD price had not dropped. I have not been able to stop by since the price cut. I would buy the 301 except I am really bummed that there is no Dolby True HD or DTS MA supported.

I have been watching at my local BB. They have pallets on the floor of the PS3's (both versions) and the X-Box 360 (both versions) and I have to say that our PS3 is selling more quickly! They also have a pallet of 360 HD-DVD add ons that is not moving at all. Also, they have pallets of blu ray stand alones and hd-dvd players and the blu is really moving, even though it $50.00 more. Looking at the disc sales, the blu set is wiped out all the time and the red section is packed!

On another note, I take what the Gadget site says lightly.

The Blu-Ray camp needs to do more in terms of movie pricing. All these BOGOs are great, but I am not finding alot of movies I really want from those sales. The online retailers charge so much for shipping now that any major cost savings as a result of buying online are lost.

I was there in the beginning of SDs as I am now for BRs. Online retailing was still in its infancy at the time and DVD prices were uber cheap online with reasonable shipping and lots of incentive to buy multiple titles from an etailer. You can still get new DVD releases around $15 in BM stores the first week, but there are almost no such discounts on new BR titles. I can't justify spending $25-40 for a movie. TH BR camp needs to lower their MSRP on movies. I know the studios are looking to this as their next cash cow, but if they dont bring BR disc prices more inline with DVDs, then the format will stall.
