Interesting observation about these deals
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, now this is interesting: October: Sony deals - CC Buy 2 get 1. Outpost/Fry - $9.99 titles FYE, JR.Com, Best Buy - All having some sort of Disney/Buena Vista sale. A couple of things that are interesting: 1. Is this Sony and Disney pushing Blu-Ray into the market? Basically winning the 4th quarter and putting the screws down on HD-DVD? 2. I am surprised about the choice of companies. How come no Target? How come no Walmart? I would assume Walmart is the #1 seller of BD. 3. Each of these companies has a B&M. None of these are online only. 4. These are obvious STUDIO sales. 5. Are these sales going to be the trend the entire 4th quarter? If so, this war is over. 6. Is Warner going to follow Sony and Disney with their own sale? 7. What will the attach rate jump up to per owner? My opinion: 1. Yes. They are going to control the 4th quarter, pushing thier edge to around 70% in the market place. (HomeRetailing article declares the 4th quarter to be vital. http://www.homemediamagazine.com/ind...2&newsid=11353 ) 2. It looks like they are choosing to go with Tech companies. Not sure why though... 5. I would assume so. 6. I would assume not. 7. I would assume the attach rate is going to double or triple. Basically, I think that there are 3 different Blu-Ray camps. 1. Those that love it and support it. (some of us.) 2. Those that love it, and will buy when cheap enough. (most of us.) 3. Those that are not sure about it, and are sitting on the fence, waiting to buy. (Some of us) 4. Those that have a PS3, but don't play movies with it. (Probably none of us, but a good group of people.) This new strategy, if it is a strategy, moves groups 2,3 and 4 to be buyers. group 4 and 3 will move when the price is not a problem. When group 4 sees the use of the PS3, they can slide up to 1. :-) Sorry for the long post, and I could be totally wrong, but boy am I fired up. :-) Now, lets see if the wife kills me for buying like crazy.... Thanks, Matthew |
