Warner Bros Godzilla (2014) Blu-ray 3D [Region Free]

Godzilla 3D Blu-ray

Godzilla 4K + 3D Blu-ray steelbook

So I'm pretty excited about this one but I have to wonder... does anyone know if it's actually going to be shot in 3D or converted?

This is the first I've heard of Godzilla 2014, thanks for the news. I remember seeing Godzilla 2000 (I think that was the name) in theaters way back when, which was the imported movie, not the Hollywood reboot. Cool to see this will be in 3D, whether filmed or converted.

Here's an info link:

I'm all for more Godzilla. I haven't seen them all, but I do enjoy the original, Roland Emmerich's version, and a few of the others in between. A new favorite of mine is Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack.

However, I wasn't impressed at all with Gareth Edwards' Monsters. I'm sure they'll make Godzilla exciting and give it a big spectacle, but if it's all shot with handheld cameras that masks the action rather than show it, I'll be ticked. To say nothing of dumb characters and political overtones.

I'm not a fan of the campy Godzilla, although I can't deny that most of the Showa and Millenium series's Godzilla are pretty awesome. I even remember going to see Godzilla 2000 on cinemas when I was 6-7 years old and I loved it . It's sad that there isn't a Blu-Ray or DVD release of many of those films (Final Wars is BEGGING for a new transfer).

By the way, about Pacific Rim... apparently it's a hybrid, the CGI stuff is just rendered with 2 virtual cameras while the live-action footage will get converted (Del Toro asked for the native CGI renders to do the conversion, otherwise he wouldn't allow the conversion).

P.S. Did you make City Of Rott and Dead Fury? I got those a while ago from Unearthed (Along with a copy of Aftermath, Flexing With Monty, Black Sun and Mermaid In A Manhole) and I loved them!

Handheld cameras can get out of control and twitchy, and as a result, lose a lot of the understanding of what is going on in the shot. Many times they do that to cover up the fact that the choreography was minimal at best. Hopefully that's not the case and they hold the camera's more smoothly, staying focused on the action.

Yes, more rare Godzilla films on DVD or blu ray would be nice. I still remember seeing the one with Godzilla's son, which was pretty entertaining as he fought a monster.

Godzilla in strong 3D has a lot of potential. Pacific Rim and its 3D will give us a good idea of the sense of scale possible with the monsters vs robots.

Thanks KillerJuan77 for checking out City of Rott, Dead Fury. On that note,
[Show spoiler]my third cut out style film, Shock Invasion (on DVD at amazon.com) features lots of monsters and a Godzilla sized, fire breathing dragon like monster.
Thanks again.

Cool. I haven't looked in years, thanks for the update. I'll check it out.

If it's native 3D, most studios new to 3D need practice time with the 3D for simple to complex scenes before they get onto the clock with the real set. I think that's why most studios skip the 3D camera rig these days and just hand the 3D off to a post production 3D conversion studio.
I don't mind conversions as long as they're medium to strong 3D with minimal conversion errors. Plus many films have lots of CGI, which can be rendered for stereo 3D, saving conversion processing for those images I'd imagine, once the 2D to 3D people are composited in.

Most have only the dubbed English version available or "dubtitles" (subtitles that just copy the English dub, which are often pretty inaccurate to the original Japanese), though, see the lists here and here. The ones with "real" subtitles and uncut versions of the Japanese film that can still be found at reasonable prices are the Criterion version of the original and the set from Classic Media here (out of print but not that expensive to get used & new copies from people on amazon...it also includes the original, but the transfer isn't as good), along with Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Biollante (blu ray), and Godzilla Final Wars. Two others which have accurate subtitles but which are currently out of print, and only available for very high prices used, are the Destroy All Monsters blu ray from Tokyo Shock (along with a DVD version that goes for only slightly cheaper used), and Godzilla vs. Hedorah. For other Godzilla movies you can find semi-illicit sites that sell versions with directly translated subtitles and uncut versions of the films transferred from the Japanese DVDs (I won't give names, but google the title you're interested in plus something like "uncut japanese english subtitles"), personally I don't feel like I'm doing something shady buying from sites like that since I know that if an accurate legal version ever appears in the U.S. I will re-purchase.

It would be interesting to see Godzilla in 3d I read that they are trying to make it more dark and edgy also, I liked final war so I might just watch this one

Dark and edgy is the approach from what I've read.

Y'know, the realistic approach. Not as in dumbing down Godzilla to be "a more believable giant radioactive lizard than before!", but trying to realistically portray how people, governments and environments might react to Godzilla's presence. I believe this is what Man of Steel is hoping to achieve as well.

I'm guessing converted;

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0831387/...ef_=tt_dt_spec

I don't know of anything shot natively on Alexa, but I don't know what "Alexa plus" means, and I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on this.

It does all stem from a proposed IMAX movie, that was always intended to be 3D, and the project just got turned into a regular feature somewhere down the track. But considering that the project was started specifically for 3D, it could lead one to believe that in following suit the actual feature will be native.

Who knows. Lots of 3D fans are enjoying conversions these days anyway, and next year's conversions will probably look better than this year's.

I did a bit of research (AKA Google and Wiki) and I noticed this feature: "Lens Synchronization for 3D"

I'm not sure what it does but it probably involves some sort of tool to actually make the lenses of 2 cameras perfectly synchronized for a better and easier 3D shoot. Not sure about this though... I may be a film student by the end of this year but so far I can guess that it works for that.

Yeah. Obviously, you wouldn't want your two cameras accidentally set at different focal lengths. Talk about retinal rivalry.

Warner Bros Godzilla (2014) Blu-ray 3D [Region Free]

Quote:
Godzilla is an upcoming American science fiction monster film featuring the Japanese film monster of the same name and a reboot of the Godzilla film franchise. It is the second Godzilla film to be fully filmed[4] by an American studio, the first having been the 1998 film of the same name. The film retells the origin of Godzilla in contemporary times as a "terrifying force of nature". The film is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe.
The film is a co-production[5] of Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures worldwide, except for Japan where it will be distributed by Toho. The film is scheduled to be released on May 16, 2014 in 2D and 3D.[6] It will be the last collaboration between Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures.

Thumbs up

FAN POLL: Who do you prefer, the Evil Godzilla or the Good Godzilla from the classic Godzilla films?

Here's hoping for a good story and lots of giant battles between Godzilla. Is Mothra the giant Moth in this one? Hopefully we get some new villains this round with a more serious, realistic style. Godzilla will be evil this round?

Pacific Rim 3D had some very impressive 3D and monster battles. Here's hoping Godzilla 2014 can match or exceed it.

Giant monsters is a tough sell to mainstream audiences in the US anyway (see the only decent US box office sales for Pacific Rim as an example), so much credit to these guys for going ahead with this Godzilla project. Looking forward to it and hoping the 3D lives up to the very high standard of Pacific Rim's strong 3D layers.
