i'll continue (kind of) the thread NYG locked out (and rightfully so) because we got seriously off topic discussing games...
http://ps3land.com/article-656.php essentially from what i gather, the levels are so large and interactive and once u integrate textures, good luck anyway, somewhat interesting giving some of the earlier debate |

This is why PS3 will be much much better than xBox360. The BDRom advantage will lead to PS3 being victorious!

Much as I'd like to see it, I'm not entirely convinced that a PS3 launch game will do things that are impossible on the Xbox360.
I want it to be true simply to shut the 360 fanboys up (as well as the 360 MS execs),so here's hoping, but I bet the MS guys will grab a copy, rip it to bits and say "yeah, this can be done on the 360, here's how..." etc On the plus side, it sounds like loading times are effectively zero, although I'm surprised that with next gen graphics there is a need for ingame movie sequences. |

the way i see it, resistance's size claims are nothing but a marketing trick.
after all, say what you may, even a top-notch gaming pc has just 2gb of ram and 512mb videoram; the ps3 is even worse, with just 256mb of each. that puts quite a limit on what can be loaded at once. ofcourse it can keep loading new and new stuff as you progress onwards, while unloading the stuff it doesn't need, but... man... that'd mean the game gets much much different as you progress through it. 20gb is 40 times the ps3's capacity, and if we assume the game's playtime is 40 hours (but don't get your hopes up, it might be quite less) then we should get a completely different *everything* every hour. it'd be great if that were the case, but forgive my scepticism. games just aren't made like that. what could be changing so often? any developer normally tries to reuse stuff. sure you're entering different levels, and things should look somewhat different, but usually thats done with all the same things and objects just arranged in a new way. in this case, i fear they just intentionally went on to *waste* all the space that they could, i.e. having a wall at one place and a wall on another with slightly different texture for no obvious reason, etc. that might turn out to really make the game look better and be a good feeling, but might also just end up as a horribly unefficient and unoptimised game/level design... we'll have to wait and see what it turns out, i guess. for one thing, they sure got my interest into this game ![]() edit: also, even if the game really turns out to be as great as they hype it, and all that space is really needed, they still can get it released for the xbox too, on 2-3 dl dvds and have the player change them at certain places. thats not all that horrible a solution, though i sure would love to watch the face of a xbox player having to swap discs after every map in a multiplayer session ;P or imagine a conversation - "guys lets play some resistance" "ok, which maps" "ah only maps from 12 to 17 pls, i lost my first disk" Last edited by georgir; 09-11-2006 at 08:17 AM. |

25GB for game content at this stage is very unlikely. PC games that sport similar High end graphics are barely the size of a DVD9. Graphics content can be compressed in to archive like files which can actualy be several times smaller than uncompressed. Try unpacking a .pak file with WinRar, you will be amazed how big it is uncompressed.
I can bet that most of the space on a PS3 BD-rom will be used for the very same thing that Sony was famous for in all Playstation games; pre rendered CGI movies. Why when they can do realistic realtime graphics? Because they can,. and will do it. Square Enix will definately have CGI cut scenes. Uncompressed audio, and multiple audio daologues will be expected from all that space. Thats right, no excuse for not including Japanese tracks anymore, although they had lost that excuse since DVD9 (dumb red necks). unless they plan to put totaly uncompressed game content whcih is unnessary as archived compression has %100 quality as uncompressed. There is no way a company can develop in-game content for 25 GB this early in the stage. 10 to 15 max for really long games. |

That CGI is going to be freaking amazing though. I love Square Enix's pre rendered CGI videos they are very very impressive usually so i'm expecting a lot when they on the new system.
