I am buying a PS3 mainly for the Blu Ray option, the fact that 20th Century Fox is only making Blu Ray dvds, and to play from time to time my old PS2 titles.

My other questions are:

Will I see blu ray dvd movies in 1080i and not 480p resoltion?

Is it because of the new firmware that came out that I'm able to watch movies in 1080i? and is it easy to install the firmware updates?

Do I need to buy any seperate cables, and if, which ones? After reading this I am confused: Also, to suit your TV's specification, you can now select the video output format (automatic, RGB, or Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr) for Blu-ray disc playback using an HDMI cable.

Does my TV have or need HDMI?

Will my ps3 games play in 480p or 1080i format?

Do I need a new remote control or does it come with a basic one?

Should I plunge in and buy the PS3 today?, Ive found a decent deal as well.

Thank you all, any simple answers to these questions would be appreciated.

Yep...only requirement to play blu-rays is a standalone blu-ray player or ps3. Any TV can be used...but the higher the resolution the better of course. A 1080i will look pretty damn good. My projector is 720p and it still looks amazing compared to DVD.

(one of these days...1080p projector for me)

Thanx guys, I appreciate the help, I edited my original post and added a few more questions if you care to check them out, thanks again.

The thing is that my TV does not support 720p, doesnt that mean dvd movies will be shown in 480p? Just curious and want to make sure.

A Blu-ray standalone or PS3 upconverts regular DVDs quite nicely, too.

The biggest cable requirement is the use of HDMI cables wherever possible. They provide the best improvement in image.

the ps3 is an AWESOME piece of machinery. I would kill a man for trying to take mine haha seriously I talked a guy into buying one yesterday at the local best buy when he was inquiring about the best blu-ray player out there.

Games will play in either 1080i or 720p depending on your settings. All my games look gorgeous on my 36" 1080i.

blu rays will be seein in 1080i or 720 p again depending on your settings. again all my blu-rays look AMAZING.

the new firmware has nothing to do witnn the 1080i capability, but def upgrade no matter what.

doesnt look like your tv has a hdmi port but neither does mine. you can use a dvi-hdmi cable or a component cable. I use a dvi-hdmi cable and it looks fabulous.. I have used component too and it looks equally great to be honest.

the only issue you will have with a component cable is that it will NOT upconvert your standard dvd's to 1080i or p if its copyright protected (which all of them practically are) I use my dvi to hdmi and even the standard dvds look MUCH better upconverted. But if your just worried about your blu ray watching component cables will work just fine. SOme people even think you get more vibrant and warmer colors from component.

you can use the controller that the ps3 comes with to control blu-ray playability but I would purchase the blue tooth ps3 remote at best buy or any electronics store. I recommend it. I bought mine for like $25 and it makes life easier.

hope this helps

DVDs are upconverted to 1080i if you have that resolution set and are using HDMI (you will need an HDMI to DVI cable). I believe you are mistaken about 720p, however. I have a 65H83 (same year) and it supports 720p (converts to 1080i), and looks great. Have you actually tried a 720p source?

The issue with PS3 and TVs that don't support 720p is that 720p games are only displayed at 480p. They can't be upconverted to 1080i.

Thanks again guys, I willd definately have to buy the dvi-hdmi cable and a remote. Now another thing that baffles my mind, I had found a PS3 for 399$ but it's the stupid 40gb version, I dont understand why the 40gb does not play ps2 games, i dont get these things, they boggle the mind.

So what do I need than, a 6ogb version or an 80gb version, and how do I know which ps3 games play on 1080i? If my TV says it only supports 480p/i and 1080i I cant excpect it to support 720p?

Now if only I could buy that Sci-Fi Mass Effect game for PS3, I 'm kidding, just dreaming.

Looking VERY forward to watching Alexander Revisited, Troy Director's cut, 300, Kingdom of Heaven, King Arthur, Sunshine and Pathfinder on Blu Ray.
