Default Can fingerprints damage the top part of a blu ray/dvd disc?

I know thta if you leave fingerprints under a disc , it can be fatal for it, but what about the top of the dvd or blu ray disc? I ask this because sometimes it is almost impossible to avoid leaving fingerprints on the top of a blu ray or dvd especially when when placing it on a laptop or blu ray tray or back in its case.

Fingerprints are never fatal. They might cause the laser to not read the disc, but you can fix it with a good cleaning. Only scratches can permanently damage a disc. And no, fingerprints on top can't cause any problem (though you should hold discs by the edges anyway).

Due to the scratch resistant coating on blu-rays, fingerprints are very easy to wipe off (without using any solution or water) with a dry soft cloth.

I suppose in theory, but it would have to be very, very excessive over time and dependent on what you're using.

Just use common sense.

Yes, if you wipe it with sand paper.

I assume the OP was talking about the possibility about peeling the plastic layers off. I don't know, but I hope that blu rays use the same sticking mechanism that the scratch resistant coatings for phones use. I've had one on my phone for over two years now and it doesn't show any signs that it's about to get peeled off, even though I use and abuse my phone way more than a blu ray.

Only if you use an abrasive to wipe it clean...just like anything of value, you use a clean, soft cloth.

The only sure-fire way to avoid fingerprints on your disc is to slice off the skin on your fingertips with a razor blade, ala John Doe in Se7en.

It's drastic, but effective. You just have to decide what's more important to you - having fingertips or having pristine discs, top and bottom (not to mention the upper hand.)

There's a very simple method to holding discs in such a way as to avoid fingerprints.

...it offends me that so few people seem to use it.

Thumb on outer edge, middle finger in center ring. Where do fingerprints come from?

I assume mainly from putting the discs back in the case.

And, how would fingerprints on the top of the disc affect its use? The top is not used for any data.
