Take a look:

The Top Grossing Studios 2006

1. Buena Vista 17.5%
2. Sony Pictures 17.0%
3. 20th Century Fox 15.0%
4. Universal 10.6%
5. Warner Bros. 10.1%
6. Paramount 9.8%
7. Lionsgate 3.2%
8. New Line 2.4%
9. Fox Searchlight 2.2%
10. Weinstein/Dimension 1.6%

See the top three companies? Those are Blu-ray exclusives. In fact 9 out of those 10 studios support blu-ray while only 5 or 6 support HD DVD.

gdaversa19, the other day while looking at an Amazon BD vs HD DVD sales comparison web page thing, there were about 50% more titles (1.5x) in HD DVD right now, not 3 times as more (3x)

this difference will change as more BD players are released and more people actually have players to buy and play the discs themselves! (I have a few BDs and I don't own a player yet ) . Sales will determine how many movies studios will release over the next few years.

Yes, as of right now it's about 120 HD-DVD titles on the market to about 80 for Blu-ray... that number will change very quickly and the Blu-ray titles will be getting better and better while the same may not be true for HD-DVD since it doesn't have the studio depth.

I'm not sure that the numbers will be equal by the end of this year, but perhaps they will be much closer. The real meat of Blu-ray will come when disc production is really going strong a BD50 discs (dual-layer) are more normal. Once that is standard, then I expect most studios will do Blu-ray and DVD releases on the exact same date.

If you read some more, the obvious excpetion is Universal Studios who only release moves on HD-DVD... unfortunately. This may change in the future, so don't get worked up over it. Likewise, Disney, Fox, and Sony studios only will release movies on Blu-ray, and not HD-DVD.

Well, you can always buy plenty of Universal movies in PAL DVD and get a 20% improvement in resolution over NTSC if your DVD player/Home Theater set up can do PAL, and have a quasi Super-DVD version while Universal withholds their 10% of titles out
