BLURAY TITLES specifically for SOUND:
I can’t believe how my wife and many others like her couldn’t care less about sound quality. They seem to be the ones that give a review leaving almost no comment on sound, or skip it entirely as if it where were merely an extra! Well since I purchased one of those fang dangled HDMA home theater receivers with a good quality 5.1 speaker system to match…my wife couldn’t care less about the picture…Well you know what I mean..LOL When I played my first Blu-ray through the PS3 with just 2.1 computer speakers, the first thing to hit me was the sound…Yea the picture was WOW, but I knew instantly the potential that was to be had with the right sound gear. I remember when I hooked up a prologic receiver like 15 years ago how I just about wet my pants listening to sci/fi in what could only be described as 3 dimensions. I was hooked immediately however as time passed on and the bills stacked up I was forced to sell my home theater equipment at a time where DTS was taking over…It was truly a painful experience. None the less, as soon as I heard the clarity coming out of my little PC speakers with my first bluray, I just knew it would be madness not to try out a cheap entry level receiver with some reasonable speakers to match. The first sound test was total bliss…Alien Vs Predator Requiem…Straight away as the Predators space ship appeared on the screen, we all simply turned and looked at each other (despite the eye catching candy to be had) with dropped jaws in total astonishment. The reverberations that shook the room could be literally felt in our bones…It was as if the spaceship was about to land in our lounge room. From that point on each of the 5.1 speakers had its own story. None of us uttered a word but instead hung on every sound wave coming from all directions in a timely fashion that had us anticipating what may or may not happen next. Without a doubt we knew we had arrived at the next level of entertainment. Of course this comes as no surprise for the many people out there who already have home theater setups & even then, some of those guys could improve on what they have. I love sound so much now that even if the picture is not that great I don’t care! I am often let down by some movies that have fantastic video but crap sound & more often than not see movies with crappy video quality, but great sound! Once you can appreciate sound you will also be able to appreciate much older releases as if watched for the first time. Basically I just wanted to say hi and if there are any guys out there that Love audio as much as I, could you please list some blu-rays with sound specifically in mind! I hear HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is superb for sub…I’m yet to listen to it. I can confirm that Alien Vs Predator Requiem was fantastic for sound. Great sub workout and levels were even all round…consistent with surround sound. I thought Transformers was superb for sound…Kind of gave a new dimension to LFE …I often use the logo introduction at the very start of the film as a demo to my friends and just like my family of late, they are always left with jaws dropped…WTF! AWSOME MAN…Holly Shmolly!!!! I wonder how Gladiator will sound when released & so forth…………. So if you guys know of any memorable moments to do with Blu-ray Titles & or demo scenes with sound in mind…please could you post and share that experience with others. ![]() |

As with you I'm a sucker for great sound and room rumbling bass but the movie that stands out the most for me on BD was basically a throw in movie that my brother recommended one night while picking out BD rentals at BB. From the opening scene I knew I was hearing something special and by the time Prudence was introduced singing I wanna hold your hand I fell hook, line and sinker in love with Across the Universe. Simply a great, great movie with both reference PQ & AQ.
For a different kind of speaker workout that's not coming from an action or sci-fi movie I suggest giving this little musical a whirl on the PS3! |

Absolutely....MUSIC counts as well...I feel this is where having a good amp truly kicks ass over lust using a set of speakers or using the TV itself. Sure many of today’s HDTVs have great sound...but yeaaaaaa...Music really does have its own special effect with a good setup.
I've been wondering about that flick "across the universe", that’s why I asked for opinions...well give it a go. As for music...I kind of liked how 'credence clear water" was coming through on Die Hard Live Free...apart from the fact the young fella was getting pissed of with it, It really grabbed me how it sounded so clear. Actually Die Hard 4 really had some suspenseful and effective music all the way through it!!!! Kind of Jawsy suspense. Jaws!!!!!..............LOL now I can see a lot of people pull that flick apart on quality and pure misunderstanding of how things were done back then...ect...But I wonder what the sound remake would be like on that one. It really was a Major Motion Pic in its day. I guess as far as sound goes...you can’t go to wrong with most major motion pics...even some of the old ones...I will have to give the Original Planet of the Apes a Go. It might be old stereo but I still remember those drums beat up the suspense and how many other flicks tried using that same technique in many other films afterwards...I can't remember which ones do it to who...but there are many films like that, who have tried to rip off another’s audio technique...each to thier own I suppose...or in that case I guess not. ![]() Keep em comming ![]() |

Seriously. The audio is worth a listen... even if you dont like the movie (not sure how thats possible though.) The movie was also purely amazing. The only issue i had was the Picture Quality was "TOO" good. Its recorded it a hand-held camera kind of way... and seeing the PQ as clear as it was kind of gives you a "This isnt a handheld camera..." feeling if you know what i mean. But yes. DEFINATELY give Cloverfield a try if you havent already. The audio is just... ![]() ![]() |

To be honest, I'm more a fan of audio than the video. Don't get me wrong, I want a good video transfer, I just prefer the audio done right (lossless all the way).
If I were a BD creator, the first thing i'd do is have a lossless track, then the great video, then any extras. |

Sound is soooo much of the home theater experience! I am dissatisfied with my Sony BDP-S300 mostly because I can't get the DTS-HD Master Audio. 350 here I come!
As far as an amazing acoustic experiece goes, so far "Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds- Live at Radio City" is a must buy. You will be in awe with the SQ. BTW, experiment with both PCM and Dolby TrueHD settings. I found that the PCM was much richer. This may be due to my BD player. |

Believe it or not, I got into blu-ray more for the HD audio codecs than the picture. And to be honest, if DVD supported HD audio with it's current pricing I could live with buying those until blu-ray pricing came down to the same level (yes, I'm aware of the limits on why DVD could never support HD audio). My fav's for AQ are (not necessarily in this order):
Live Free Or Die Hard Black Hawk Down Master And Commander 300 Cars Ratatouille Pirates 1-3 Terminator 2 (for being vanilla 5.1 it still sounds phenomenal) Pearl Harbor (excellent PCM soundtrack, lame movie - but Kate is in it so I'll watch ![]() Underworld (AQ is a huge improvement over the dvd, and because Kate is in it, too ![]() |
