Talking Circuit City Drops HD DVD(Link to Article)

http://www.1080living.com/modules.ph...article&sid=17

Circuit City in a not so surprising move has discontinued the HD-DVD format in favor of expanding it's Blu-Ray lineup.

Circuit City-long a unofficial supporter of Blu-Ray has always carried HD-DVD in limited quantities vs. it's Blu-Ray inventory. Sources say that this move is not a direct response to Warner studios announcements but more related to the lopsided sales makeup of Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD which in the past weeks has been 85:15 in favor of Blu-Ray says several industry sources

1080living.com contacted 7 Circuit City locations. 5 would not comment citing policies against disclosing merchandising changes, while 3 confirmed that the company has discontinued the HD-DVD format. One store manger informed us, "This move is for business reasons only as Circuit City is committed to the next generation of Hi Def DVD viewing. Based on company sales of the two formats which consisted of 87 percent for Blu-Disc and 13% for HD the company felt that now should be the time to fully commit our resources to one format. Circuit City is the leader of technology and this move again reinforces out commitment to offering out customers the very best available. We expect our competitors to follow suit shortly."

As a result, Circuit City stores will be placing all HD-DVD players on clearance and though no specific price has been announced we were told to expect players in the $100 range.

tell me about it. When I was shopping for my tv last June, I said "I wanna see a Blu-ray on this thing" and so the guy shows me Space Cowboys on HD-DVD! I still ended up buying it though.

My local Circuit City has had a Blu-ray display setup for over a year now. When you first walk in, there's a Sony SXRD and a Panny plasma setup side by side, both with 5.1 home theater setups and a sofa... the whole 9. But one has a Sony S300 Blu player and the other has an upconverting DVD player playing the same movie. It's pretty easy to tell the difference on this setup.

Unfortunately, the employees there really don't know too much about either format, in my experience. Hopefully they'll get some more training in once the exclusivity is official.

The dominoes just keep dropping on HD-DVD, soon we won't even have to talk about that other format anymore!

Say waht? CC has been more in the red camp if they were in any at all. The only demos I've seen set up have been for HD DVD players including one right when you enter the door. Titlewise they are split right down the middle, but overall have a tiny section compared to Best Buy.

I did notice that while my local stores didnt have the players on clearance yet that front demo area has been replaced with a blu-ray demo endcap. But seriously, a long unafficial supporter of blu-ray, hah!

Somehow I don't accept the credibility of a "news site" that's only had 17 articles since inception.

This is the worst respond by a DUD supporter ever:

Circuit City is no major player anyhow so big deal. I am keeping my Red machine until they can pull it out of my dead hands. Even if all of the studios support Blu Dud I will stay red and just rewatch all of the same movies. I hate Sony, I hate Blu dud, and I hate anyone that likes Blu dud.
I will just go around and post on every website there is to talk trash about blu dud. Come to av forums where all of us love the hd format even if hd goes out of business which it will not because all we need is just 1 studio support and we have 2
Go red, down with blu, red rules, blu sucks and so do you.

What a loser. Go back to your closet and keep listening to your 8-track tapes, lol.

At my cc they have always supported blu-ray. So i would not speak for every store.

I was saying the same thing when I read this. CC has been such a HUGE supporter of the Red team since day one. End caps up, 3x the space given to titles and players featured with movies playing.

I will say this as I have been saying with all of these posts coming thru on this sort of news. Until we see or hear from a CEO from a company stating officially that they have dropped the format, it is all hearsay and cannot then be believed.

only 87%-13%? CC must have taken a huge payoff from BD to drop HDDVD.

I wish that they would just have an open competition and let the customers decide.

From what I understand, CC is a traditional enemy of Toshiba, and had to make a deal with them to sell HD-DVD in their stores. Could that be why they had more shelf space for them?

It must depend on the area. The CC in my area has always been split 50/50 between blu-ray and HD DVD. Hardware-wise, they've favored blu-ray. The end-cap you see when you enter the store is blu-ray. The home theater area (with chairs, TV, etc. so you can watch movies) initially had 1 blu-ray setup and 1 HD DVD setup but for several months now has been blu-ray only. The latest change is that there is a blu-ray movie display, that you see when walking in the store, that advertises blu-ray and has several of the more popular movies in it.

Haven't had a chance to see if there are clearance items yet.
