True. The people who like it *really* like it. But there don't seem to be as many of us as there are for the bigger titles.

Which is fine. People like what they like and it's hard to argue with Psycho or The Birds or Rear Window getting a lot more attention.

Me? Rope probably makes it into my player more frequently than my next three favorite Hitchcock's combined.

I took a few weeks off to avoid Rise of Skywalker spoilers and it was like a fever broke. It hit me that most of my posts were in the same three or four threads arguing about the same three or four stupid things

A few days ago, I talked to someone in reddit who is exploring Hitchcock's filmography for the first time now. He says that he had only watched Psycho and The Birds before actually deciding to explore Hitchcock's filmography seriously. He says he chose to watch Rope first, and that he really liked it a lot. He says he watched Rear Window after, still liked it, but not as much as Rope. He plans to watch North By Northwest next, and then Vertigo.

I mentioned the scene towards the end of Rope where Hitchcock focuses on the chest being cleaned up, the dead body just seemingly about to be discovered while we hear a converstion off-screen, and he gave this great reply:

"Funny you mention that scene because that was my favourite in the whole film. I thought it was brilliantly done how he managed to build such suspense just with that slow lingering shot of the cleaning up of the chest while the characters talking weren't even on screen.

That was the scene where I was really in awe of how he could build suspense."

Yeah, this is pretty much what I meant, although I've also definitely seen it listed as among his lesser works.

One of those films that once you've seen it, is impossible to forget. Always think of this one as being alongside Notorious as great Hitchcock films just below the absolute top tier.

Speaking of which, hope North by Northwest gets a 4K too at some point soon.

I bet it will be next year, in the birthday of the film. Seems that there is a 4K restoration of it for years, which was shown in DCPs of special screenings, but Warner Bros. hasn't released it on disc yet.

This has always been the major issue with Rope on every release. I've wondered if it might've been further baked into the elements, as it was one of the "lost Hitchcocks" that were improperly stored for years before the 80's revival reissue of battered sources.
The best I've ever seen the film was a newer print from Universal at a historical theater screening a few Hitchcock prints. I'm not sure what the type/manufacture date/source was for the prints of Rope and Harry I saw there.

I'm just glad more people are starting to realize how great the film is. For me it fully reveals Hitchcock's style and allows for the story and performances to fully drive the suspense in one of the most audacious no frills experiments anyone ever tried.
The main three performances are all superb, but it is Dall who remains one of the great villains and Stewart gives his first complete 100% "holy crap, this is the same Jimmy we know and love?!?!" dark nuanced postwar performance.

Anyone who says the film doesn't work, I point them and their mistaken ways to Under Capricorn.
