I had a feeling this might be the year we finally got a new release in the UK, even speculated they could go all out and make it the ultimate release with OAR, mono, all the extras they could get their hands on and even include the Kickstarter episodes so very happy to see this announcement includes all what I hoped for, now put the cherry on top and include a blueprint poster of the Thunderbirds and a replica International Rescue patch

Suppose I better get my Japanese set offloaded sharpish haha

A 4K HDR release of that would be an upscale. So I'm not really fussed about that.

It was rendered to HD tape, and I suspect rec.709 colour space. Which was actually thought lost until about 10 years ago when it looked like all that was left were SD ITV masters.

What annoyed me about the Blu-ray though was the lack of 5.1 (New Captain Scarlet had been mixed in 5.1 originally) and the changed title sequence without an option to view as original. So if they did revisit New Captain Scarlet, I'd be very much interested in a new Blu-ray with original opening titles and 5.1.

The only reference I have seen for the defintion of Thunderbirds release is "IN GLORIOUS 4.3 FULL FRAME HD!" and "SEE THE WHOLE STORY IN HD" as per the publicity video, not UHD or 4K.

However there is this.

I'm sorry, "How it was meant to be seen"?

The way it was meant to be seen was on one of these:

So unless the box set comes with one, it's not true to the original.

If you want to be even more anal about it, the it was not seen on colour TV in the UK for the original transmissions. 405-line B&W.

Are you sure about that? Stingray, which predates Thunderbirds, even has a cheeky little intro where it starts in black & white, only to then zoom out, revealing it to have been a TV screen all along, while also switching to color.

I like it.

The Telefuken TV set is really too modern and luxirous being colour and 8 channels (wow) they would have to supply a black and white set for true 1965 originality.

I believe ITV have embraced them as bona fide extra episodes of the show. It's just the first reissue over here, so they haven't had a chance to be included before. They have been given a wide release already in Japan. They're on Britbox/ITVX too.

Are these likely to be sympathetic restorations?

I would have thought so, if it was not there would be a terrible backlash.

Looking at the video clip I can still see the marionettes have their strings, so that is good, keeping to originality of the show, even though if they could have done so back in the 1960s you would have not seen the strings at all.

This is brilliant news and I look forward to having the complete Thunderbirds in HD, the episodes which Network restored and released are very pleasing to watch.
