Default My Wife Noticed My New Receiver

So UPS drops off my Yammy RX-V1800 the other day and I promptly replaced my aging RX-V995 with it. I thought I could sneak it in there since the wife was out with her niece and she wasn't aware of the purchase. Anyway, we were getting ready to watch Serenity last night and I was messing around with the audio settings when my wife goes "Hey, I don't recognize that receiver. Did you get a new one?" And then I go "Uh... Oh yeah! Heh heh... I just got this to replace our old receiver. (start sweating) Look babe, we needed this new receiver to really enjoy all the lossless audio of our Blu-ray and HD DVD movies and... " She cuts me off abruptly "That's cool, honey. I'm not mad. How much was it?" "Oh, like $900. But don't worry! You see I'm selling the old receiver to offset the cost and I've got money stashed away in PayPal and...."

She wasn't mad at me.

I'm slipping, guys. I can't hide big purchases like I use to be able to.

I guess I'm lucky . . . I don't have to try Sounds like your wife is pretty cool though. Many men would be ball-less now.

Oh, and she hasn't noticed the Infinity Primus yet. How she missed that is beyond me.

My significant other thought the size of my new SVS subwoofer was far more ridiculous than its $950 price tag. But after hearing it, she likes it too so I guess I'm lucky!

I tried the same thing with my Denon. Didnt work for me either lol. I was at work and she called me and told me she noticed the new reciever. She was going to watch a movie and when she went to put the movie in the player she noticed the new one. She was a little upset but she does the same when she goes to the mall. She hides her bags in closets around the house till i fall asleep. My son tells me. So it goes both ways.

The bass from the Infinity sub was so deep, she was like "wow!". I guess she thought that was being produced solely from the receiver.

Yeah, I'm going to be a good boy and curb my big spending for a while. The HT is just fine as is and I can now stop worrying about a "future proof" receiver for the next 10 years... hopefully.

I told my wife the same thing about "future proofing". She just laughs at me when I tell her I "need" something. I just bought a Onkyo 805 2 weeks ago to replace the Sony STRDG1000 I bought, for future proofing, less then 9 months ago.

I have some issues.

I'm lucky in that my wife is very low maintenance and she also has no hobbies. I don't know how she goes through life without dying of boredom, but she's just not into anything enough for it to be a hobby.

I envy you Falcon. Your wife cares about your system. My girlfriend doesn't even care. She has yet to say anything about picture or sound quality of blu-ray. I watched Planet Earth with her last night, not an "ooohhh" or an "aaahhh". It makes me sad.

I saw a thread, maybe on here, that was awesome in dealing with the wife.

The guy added up all the money he spent on her to get her hair done, nails done, all her little stuff that just adds up. Then he added up the stuff he bought on a regular basis, and it wasn't much. Then he went out and spent a pretty sizeable sum of money on home theater gear, car parts . . . something big. The wife got home, flipped out, so the guy presented her with the figures he had come up with and compared his purchase to all her little crap, and basically just told her to STFU. Classic.

LOL That is classic. Fortunately my wife has never really been high maintence, so I've lucked out as far as her spending money irrationally. That's my job.

This morning she was teasing me a bit though. "Yeah, now I know why you got my that $100 gift card for a day spa on Valentine's Day and told me to disappear (the day the receiver arrived) and spoil myself." Sneaky.

See, I mention the purchase once and only once to the wife. I typically donate blood plasma twice a week to afford my home theater stuff. Bought everything I own (HD wise anyway) with that money. Before I went Blu, I bought the Oppo 981-HD up-converter soon after buying my new TV. She was a little peeved wen she found it. We talked and she says, "Now that you mention it, I do remember you saying that."

I actually got her reluctant okay for the HDTV, the surround sound, and my receiver. I told her about two weeks before Christmas that I was sure Blu would win and that I was going to get a player with my $. She was not real happy about that, but says she is over it now. She really likes the clarity of the movies. So it can go both ways.

I actually own about 42 BDs with 5 or 6 on order and I only have about 20 out and they are still kept in sliding filers in our entertainment unit (not in the open and stashed behind the games). The other 20 are stashed in the bottom of my shorts drawer (where she would never get into). Kind of sneaky, but the price I play to continually buy new Blus.

I always manage to slip new BDs in without her noticing. That's pretty easy, but she loves watching movies with me so it's all good. She was really happy about the Harmony One purchase though (it replaced my very short lived 880). She hated seeing remotes all over the place and gave me a resounding thumbs up with the universal remote purchase.

I know just what tha's like. Sometimes I can sneak in a Blu-ray or two into the house without her knowledge and since so many o them were gifts, I pretend it was a gift we got on my Birthday or Christmas. I think she only caught me once.
Since we are trying to save more, I have been forced to cut down on how many I buy. In fact I haven't purchased one in a while... to make up for the new iMac we just got. But next month, I plan to dive back in to BD purchases.
Now a receiver?? You are a brave brave man! I only wish I could pull that one by my wife, maybe then i'd be able to be new one that supports DTS HD MA... but no worries.. it supports everything else I want. But I DO need to upgrade my subwoofer and speakers.
