Question What's the best for my situation?

Sorry if this is a repeat, but could you guys make a recommendation for me?
My grandparents just got a brand new 40" 1080p HDTV, (I'm so proud of them! ) and I thought they might want a Blu-Ray player to go with it. They don't have the internet, (yet, maybe in the future), and have no interest in playing PS3 games, or surround sound. Which player would best suit them? I figured I could burn firmware updates to disc and take to their house. Am I wrong in this assumption?

You are correct in your assumption. To be honest, I would wait a couple of months to buy a BD player. Right now the players like the Samsung BD 1400 and the Sony 300S are running around $400 maybe a little cheaper online. Once the new players are introduced the price on the existing players will drop.

The Panny DMP-BD30K is one of the best players available (IMHO) if you don't want to wait for the price drops.

For a standalone right now I would recommend the Panasonic BD30 or wait for the BD50.

I hate to say this, but if they want a great player that has fast load times, is easily firmware updateable and fairly futureproof......buy the PS3.......it's a great Blu-Ray and DVD player........

Loading times and SW compatibility are going to be big deals with your grandparents........my PS3 has had no issues in these areas. They will be happy.

I, too, have a PS3, and love it, using it as a DVD player and BD player more than a console, but I think that most of the functionality will be wasted on them, and that it might get confusing. That remote's pretty imposing. So, maybe it would be a good Father's Day gift? In the meantime, what's a good DVD player? Oppo?

Yeah got myself a PS3, and loving it, but I got to say that for people not interested in tech, it would be wasted and probably even scary at times ...

As previously said, either the Panny BD30K, or waiting till summer for the Sony S350 / other models, seem the best options imho

I second this idea. Once the newer profiles hit the market, the 1st and 2nd generation players should drop in price. You could save yourself $150 that you could put towards some of their favourite Blu-rays.

They've gone this long without Blu, I'm sure that they can wait another few months.
