This is my first post to Blu-ray.com, however I've been a fan of the site for quite sometime.
My question to all you Blu-ray supporters is, now that Blu-ray has won the format war, do you think that prices will be affected that there is no Hi-Def compitition. Some friends of mine and I were discussing whether HD DVD's would go up in price for the high demand in a failing format, or dwindle because the format will become and has become obsolite. We came to the conclusion that HD DVD's that were popular, example Transformers, would go up in price, while unpopular HD DVD's would sell for cheap. This lead us to our next question, will the price of Blu-ray movies and/or players be affected by the conclusion of this format war. Your thoughts? Personally all the HD DVD crap will drop in price, perhaps retailers wont even try to clearance it out and stuff. Looking back to when DVD took over and VHS died, the DVDs were almost always cheaper than the VHS tapes when they came out. So it is a mixed bag really...I personally dont care what happens I wont be buying any of it. Hoping Blu Ray prices will go down a tad on the movies for new release, most older titles are cheap enough where some match the DVD price so thats not too bad.

hd-dvd vs blu-ray was a bad thing. it prevented the mainstream from adopting hdm and therefore led to a slow decline in prices. now that blu-ray will be the mainstream, prices will drop drastically. also, dont forget, blu-ray still has competition in dvd. expect $150 blu-ray players by christmas.

I dont see why either one of them would go up in price. I cant remember things going up in price when previous liitle battles were ended. Now over history, everything has eventually dropped in price over time. Now as to say if there will be as many sales in the near future, I dont have a clue.

I really hope you are right. If not for high prices on some discs i would have spent 300.00 on them. Also, I do need an actual blu-ray player as I dont want to burden my ps3 all the time. |

I personally dont see a problem with Blu-ray prices. I have only payed $64 total for all nine of my Blu's. How? 5 were free and the other 4 were 2 for $30 at Best Buy. Just wait for them to go down in price. PS3 games are $60 a piece for most. Dont complain about move prices. (Even though I would pay a lot for certain movies/games. Hell i payed $85 for my MGS4:LE.)

Went to my local HMV for a laugh on the weekend. I buy all my BD's from amazon.com as Canadian pricing is crap... So HMV has a B2G1 offer on, I thought wow I'll have to check it out... Go in and they have their blu rays priced at an average of 45.99 a piece... So they want you to buy 2 for $92 plus tax to get the third for free.. what a joke

Well, its hard to imagine prices going up. However, as much as HD-DVD and Blu-ray offer great picture, many believe it's most noticeable on sets over 37 inches. Many people will use smaller TV's and be happy with DVD. Many people don't even have HDTV's let alone 1080p sets. Of course time will change that, but we're talking years here. There are a lot of messages going out to the public, ("the great and unobservant public" to coin a Sherlock Holmes phrase) about the DTV 2009 transistion. This will without question have millions of people go out an get an HDTV (even if they don't know whether they really NEED one!!). I see TV sales being the main focus this year for the general public. That is where the big money is going. They've been buying DVD's for 10 years now and they love them, thank you. The combined HD-DVD/Blu-ray player market in the public's hands is a "drop in the bucket" after a couple years. Look for Blu-ray to "catch" on in about 3 more years, especially when new computers come with them as STANDARD drives. So, after that reasoning, I'm guessing the prices will stay level for another year or so and then start to drop. Now that HD-DVD has resigned, is there much reason to immediately lower prices? But in the long term, when "no frills" players become widely available, then yes Blu-ray will gain real traction and replace DVD.

As I anticipated, since HD DVD has lost the format war, Blu-ray players and discs prices are increasing. It's unfortunate that though there is relief that Blu-ray finally won, that the format war is over, that pricing is going up.
It would seem that the competition was good for the consumer in one way, LOL. See the following site for more info: http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/patterson/14249 However, I believe that the websites like Amazon and the various BOGO offers they provide can help people like myself, it's unfortunate that I still have to pay $30 for a Blu-ray like "Unbreakable", which I already own on DVD, when I can buy the Blu-ray "Terminator 2" for $15. What gives? Juno803 52" Sony Bravia XBR4 42" Sony Wega Projection LCD Sony 60Gig Playstation 3 Sony Vaio VGN-FZ180E with Blu-ray burner Sony 7.1 HDMI STR-DG900 Receiver 106 Blu-ray Movies |
