Is that the same one that was going for about $788 at Walmart? If so, I'm not surprised. 1080p is not a concern to most people when they can get such a large screen for such a small price.

I'm wondering more about the people who bought cheap Blu players and don't even have a HDTV.

Great news...more standalone sales is always great. Good to see that Blu-ray growth over last year includes both Blu-ray and HD DVd palyers that were sold in 07. Remember that To$h had the $99 fire sale last Black Friday.

Good to see this happen, after all the negative content the past couple of months Blu-ray has pulled through with flying colors.

Also, this is 147% over the Sum of HD DVD and Blu-Ray from last year.

I have no idea what percentage of last year's Black Friday sales were HD DVD, but Blu-Ray sales by themselves had to be up more than 147%.

My grandpa is looking to buy a new TV. I was in shock when he said he wanted a flat panel TV. My grandpa is ALWAYS giving me advice with my money as he does not want to see me" picking shit with the chickens"

For him, a 720p TV is more than enough for him. He uses regular cable and a DVD player with upscalling( a cheap Phillips). For him, a 1080P TV is a waste of money. I explained that for him a 720P TV is just fine and a few hundred dollars less. He wants a 40 inch TV but wont spend more than 500. I have been looking and have seen some close but not what he wants. When I saw a 42 inch panny plasma 720P tv for 650( at frys in AZ) I was kinda in shock. Man how TV prices have dropped. I think right after christmas I will be able to find what he wants and it be a good brand( no vizio, insignia, element or westinghouse.)

Not everyone needs a 1080P TV.

not sure why you'd say that.... I did my research (so-to-speak) or at least consider myself somewhat educated on the matter, and I saw a 42" Plasma (Panasonic I think) that was 720p at Sears (doorbuster) in the paper, for $599..... If I was willing to put up with Black-Friday maddness, I would have gotten it for sure.

It shows that Blu-ray is starting to enter the mainstream consciousness. By this time next year Blu-ray will begin taking over dvd...

Information from last year:

http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6510883.html

Quote:
HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc stand-alone players sold 57,000 units during the week ended Nov. 24, the day marking the official kick-off to the holiday season

HD DVD commanded the lion’s share of unit sales for stand-alone high-def disc players, scoring a 62% unit share; Blu-ray held 37%. Due to higher price points, Blu-ray hardware cornered 52% of the revenue; HD DVD, 47%.

Assuming HD DVD player sales are negligible (pretty safe assumption):

If these percentages are based on sales #s, Blu-Ray sold ~21000 players last year, and this year sold ~140,000 this year, which would be a 567% improvement on Blu-Ray alone.

If these percentages are based on revenue, it's a lot harder to calculate. For average price of 400$ last year and 250$ this year (totally made up numbers), then Revenues for last year would have been ~16.2 million dollars. This year's revenues based on these numbers would be ~40.1 million dollars, or 160,284 Blu-Ray players, an increase of 660% on actual player sales.

Interesting stuff. Wish I had better numbers on average player price and whether these numbers were based on sales or revenue.

EDIT: Seriously bad math the first try. Surprising just how close my two %s came out based on made up numbers for the second.

Of course, re-reading it it looks like they are up only on a specific web-site, instead of industry wide. Oh well, was a fun mental exercise anyway.

And why wouldn't you? Unless you have superhuman vision, you can't really tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a tv that small anyway.
