Hey guys, I'm upgrading my speakers tomorrow (replacing my Klipsch B-3 fronts and C-2 center with RF-82 fronts and RC-52 center), and I was also going to upgrade my Yamaha RX-V661. Which receiver in your opinion is better, the Onkyo 805 or the new Yamaha 863? Price is not an issue between the two for me, I get them both for around $570.
I know a lot of you have the 805, but here is some info about the Yamaha 863... http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/p...l?CNTID=567570. I know the 863 is a 7.2, so two subs sounds like it would be nice, and also had full 1080p upscaling, which the 805 only has 720p. But what I mainly care about is sound quality, and if the Onkyo's sound quality trumps the Yamaha's, then those little perks that the 863 has don't really matter to me that much. What do you guy's think? Thanks ahead of time. |

The DTS-HD Masteraudio issue is where it gives a very loud popping sound sometimes which 'could' damage your speakers. It is a problem on several brands of Recievers right now and it's due to a specific chip set they use for the DTS-HD Masteraudio decoding. The Yamaha does not have this problem, not to mention Yamaha is a better brand in my opinion.

I actually went with the Yamaha RX-V663, since it actually didn't cost me anything! I went to Best Buy and saw that they didn't have any of the 661's anymore, and just barely got the 663s (none of the 863s though
![]() So I took a chance and took out my 661, took it to Best Buy and said I was having problems with it and if I could just do a quick exchange, they talked to their manager and he approved it, so I went and got the 663 since it was the same price as I paid for the 661. It's an awesome receiver, the sound is great. I just can't wait to get a standalone that bitstreams the hd audio codecs. |

hello,
I was wondering how the v663 is. I am interested in it myself since i also upgraded my speakers. I currently have the sony str-dg910, and wondered if upgrading to the yamaha would be worth it. I don't care about the codecs, just the calibration options the v663 has. Problem is the v663 has a lower wpc than the dg910 which has 110w.. Any input would most appreciated. |

Hi, just found your forum while doing a search for a new AV. My 12 year old Kenwood just died and I need to get a replacement. I was looking at the Onkyo SR805 until I found a really bad customer service issue from a recent purchase. So now I was looking at the Yamaha 863 but I also saw a new model HTR-6180. They have the same specs, does anyone know what the difference is? I cannot find any reviews on it either, since it is new.
thanks |

Here is the description of the Digital Top-Art: http://www.yamaha.com/yec/technology...02501#t_202501 Both Yamahas have solid specs and either one would be a good choice. |

Yamaha receivers s*uck.....I would never own a Yamaha receiver, my buddy bought one a few years ago not sure what module but within a month he was wanting to trade it off for a Denon. I have the 805 and its one fine piece of machine!

![]() ...I could list receivers from any brand ever known to man... even denon, and im sure there have been a few sub-par performers. That does not mean they all "suck". ...to each his own. ![]() |

Based on the canadian site, the RX-V863 has Zone 2 and the HTR-6180 doesn't. You can also see in the back views: RX-V863 ![]() HTR-6180 ![]() Quote:

I've been looking at receivers also and it's driving me crazy. It seems that they all have their quirks.
I will be replacing an old Denon AVR-3300 which still works great and I'll move it to the bedroom. I have Thiel CS 1.6 speakers up front, a Thiel SCS2 center, Mirage Omnipolar surrounds, and an Atlantic Technology 12" 250w sub. I also have a 3-channel Acurus amp that is driving the Thiels.....the receiver just runs the rear surrounds. I will use the same setup with a new receiver. I've basically narrowed my choices down to: Yamaha 863......Yamaha 1800.....is it worth spending more on the 1800? As to other receivers.....I'm worried about heat on the Onkyos.....the Denon 2808 and 3808 seem to have upconverting/upscaling issues with 1080i......the Sony 5300 I really like, but I don't like the price......... So, the Yamaha's seem to be a good compromise...... |
