Default Yamaha RX-V863 or Onkyo 805?

Hey guys, I'm upgrading my speakers tomorrow (replacing my Klipsch B-3 fronts and C-2 center with RF-82 fronts and RC-52 center), and I was also going to upgrade my Yamaha RX-V661. Which receiver in your opinion is better, the Onkyo 805 or the new Yamaha 863? Price is not an issue between the two for me, I get them both for around $570.

I know a lot of you have the 805, but here is some info about the Yamaha 863...

http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/p...l?CNTID=567570.

I know the 863 is a 7.2, so two subs sounds like it would be nice, and also had full 1080p upscaling, which the 805 only has 720p. But what I mainly care about is sound quality, and if the Onkyo's sound quality trumps the Yamaha's, then those little perks that the 863 has don't really matter to me that much.

What do you guy's think? Thanks ahead of time.

Hi Tense,

What is the DTS-HD Masteraudio issue?

I'd appreciate if you can elaborate on the problem for me.

Thanks in advance for explaining it.

The DTS-HD Masteraudio issue is where it gives a very loud popping sound sometimes which 'could' damage your speakers. It is a problem on several brands of Recievers right now and it's due to a specific chip set they use for the DTS-HD Masteraudio decoding. The Yamaha does not have this problem, not to mention Yamaha is a better brand in my opinion.

This issue has been fixed with a firmware update, the USA should see it soon, europeans have it first.
read here for more info:

I have the onkyo 805, its a great piece of equipment, I heard both of these before I made a final decision and I like the sound of the onkyo better.
It's paired up with Klipsch Reference speakers.

I believe that popping issue is only on the very early models of the 605. The only problem that I have ever heard of with the 805 is some lip-synch issues(on early models). Just make sure you turn your A/V delay down from the default 40msecs and you will have no problems.
I have the 805 and it is a stunning piece of equipment. Build quality is far better than the Yamaha and I like the functionality better as well. It feels easier to navigate.

Honestly, the Onkyo 805 is also a great receiver. You can't go wrong either one.

But if it were me buying, Id go with the Yamaha. Just my $.02

Default DTS HD MA decoding bug not on RX-V663/863?

Can someone confirm that the DTS HD MA decoding issue isn't present on the Yamaha RX-V663/863?

avsforum shows the bug on the higher end models Yamaha 1800/3800.

I have the V-663 and I love it. I have not had this issue and it just works flawless. I will admit when I saw an Onkyo 705 I really liked the way it looked and its so fat and is THX certified but I own both an Onkyo for my bedroom, one yamaha in my music room and my new V-663 for HT and the yamahas just sound better and always have. Hope this helps

I definitely agree. Musically, the Yamaha would be the way to go. It also has a phenomenal amp section, so you'll have great dynamic range with super clean Yamaha power that's stable down to 4 ohms.

I actually went with the Yamaha RX-V663, since it actually didn't cost me anything! I went to Best Buy and saw that they didn't have any of the 661's anymore, and just barely got the 663s (none of the 863s though ).

So I took a chance and took out my 661, took it to Best Buy and said I was having problems with it and if I could just do a quick exchange, they talked to their manager and he approved it, so I went and got the 663 since it was the same price as I paid for the 661.

It's an awesome receiver, the sound is great. I just can't wait to get a standalone that bitstreams the hd audio codecs.

Default hello

hello,

I was wondering how the v663 is. I am interested in it myself since i also upgraded my speakers. I currently have the sony str-dg910, and wondered if upgrading to the yamaha would be worth it. I don't care about the codecs, just the calibration options the v663 has. Problem is the v663 has a lower wpc than the dg910 which has 110w.. Any input would most appreciated.

Hi, just found your forum while doing a search for a new AV. My 12 year old Kenwood just died and I need to get a replacement. I was looking at the Onkyo SR805 until I found a really bad customer service issue from a recent purchase. So now I was looking at the Yamaha 863 but I also saw a new model HTR-6180. They have the same specs, does anyone know what the difference is? I cannot find any reviews on it either, since it is new.

thanks

The only difference I could find was that the RX-V863 has Digital Top-Art and the HTR-6180 does not.

Here is the description of the Digital Top-Art: http://www.yamaha.com/yec/technology...02501#t_202501

Both Yamahas have solid specs and either one would be a good choice.
