Bought 'Blue Planet' the other day. Good value, and wonderful quality. Replaces my conventional DVD of the same title which replaced my Laserdisk. Don't think I sprung for the VHS of that, but it got me to thinking. Obviously part of the purchase cost is the interllectual rights of the movie. But wouldn't it be nice if the movie studios would recognize that we have (in some cases) paid those rights over and over again and provide some kind of rebates for previous purchases. Probably impractical, but I suppose many of us have followed the progression of VHS to Laser to DVD and now to Blu-Ray. Of course there may be the odd poor sod who can add HDDVD into that chain!!!

Theoretically, it seems logic to me but impractical for physical media since there is no way to keep track of the physical media (you could sell your DVD to someone else...)
For digital downloads it could be different since companies will be able to keep track of the downloads. They kind of did that when Apple allowed users to upgrade when available their songs to itunes plus (upgrade from 128 kbps AAC encoding with DRM to DRM-free 256 kbps AAC encoding). And I'm not a fan of digital downloads for me but this could be one advantage... |

Some studios are doing that. If you have the DVD send in proof of purchase on the package and get a rebate on the blu-ray.
