Default Who in their right mind would buy a Blu-ray player right now?

From Engadget HD:

Who in their right mind would buy a Blu-ray player right now?

by Ben Drawbaugh, posted May 2nd 2008 at 11:40AM

There's been a lot of press about how Blu-ray players sales are disappointing right now, with everyone expecting sales to go up after HD DVD threw in the towel. The problem is that HD DVD just recently went belly up and anyone who followed the format war knows that this could be the worst time since Blu-ray was released to buy a Blu-ray player. This is because the latest Blu-ray titles are finally taking advantage of the latest audio codecs and the latest interactive features, but the players that are currently available are not only unable to take advantage of the latest features, but also cost more than the next generation that is due relatively soon. So while it's fun to say the reason people aren't buying is because DVD is good enough, or because the cost is too high; we prefer to think that consumers are smart enough to know that it's better to wait a month or two for the full featured, less expensive players.

It has always been about research.

Those of us who made sound decisions, base don research aren't worried.

Can't go wrong with a PS3 it is easy to upgrade. 1.1 compliant and can decode DTS MA albiet in PCM and with an entry price of $ 400 it is the most inexpensive Blu Ray player around.

Do not!

Back to the OP: It's engadget, home of bullshit Blu-ray opinion pieces.

Me too.

I hate Engadget and their spin, but I think the writer of the article makes a valid point regarding people waiting for the newer players. Most of us know that the features aren't critical but we'd all want the better player if we didn't already have one.

I would have no issue with buying a PS3 if I didn't already do that on release day.

Maybe sales are down because it is a reflection of the US economy as a whole....you think?

It would be silly to think otherwise...with gas prices and food prices going up - home sales going down - buying a high-def movie for $34 isn't exactly the tops on priority. DVD sales are down too you know.

Just a thought...now excuse me while I go spend my $1800 tax bonus that just came in today on Blu-Ray movies

I can understand what he's saying. But then again, the consumer really isn't that smart. We here on the boards are the ones who really care about things like audio codecs and BD-live.

There was a similar article in the Los Angeles Times a few days ago. However, the Times writer was intelligent enough to clarify that the sales of stand-alone Blu-ray players were down because of supply problems. He also mentioned that they do not count PS3 sales. PS3 sales are actually up.

These are the sales forecast by NPD and SIMExchange for May 2008.

Xbox 360: 370K units
PLAYSTATION 3: 382K units
Wii: 697K units
Nintendo DS: 615K units
PlayStation Portable: 372K units

I've got 2 PS3's for both of my HDTV's now. I spent a bunch on upgrading the sets, and players already. Blu-ray is awesome! I've got 20+ BD's, & games etc.

I just ordered a Sony HDR-SR12 HD Camcorder yesterday in hopes to record movies the right way. Thanks to those on this site who recommended it in the various related threads!

Everyone I know it seems has a PS3 now because of the Blu-ray and other obvious benefits. 2 more people will be purchasing when the MGS4 bundle comes out with the PS2 compatibility. People want Blu-ray! Fortunately the PS3 is such a wonderful and smart choice that compliments any setup people have. I haven't been able to convince someone to pick up a standalone because of this fact.

These Engaget retards have got to realize that you can't really use a BD player if you don't have an HDTV. It's not that people don't intend on getting one but rather that there are a couple of additional factors they have to take care of first before getting the player. Not everyone makes a bunch of money just to walk out and put it all together. Hell, I'd like to get a BD burner but I first need to upgrade my sad @$$ home computer first to be able to handle the video I'll be uploading from my future camcorder.

It really is an expensive all around proposition. Sounds like we should go work for Engaget to be able to afford all this stuff. They seem to think that people haven't chosen to pick up players because the format hasn't been accepted. What a bunch of losers!
