Default 1080p: high-res make movies look cheap & fake? (Actually frame rate TV interpolation)

I have a 1080i at home and went to some stores to check out the 1080p sets. I know its double the resolution. However, after watching the same Blu-rays I own at home at the store, it seems like every movie looks so real that it doesn't look like a movie anymore.

Everything looks like a cheap documentary or news report or theatrical play. I can't explain it. It seems the quality is too realistic to a fault. Batman Begins and ID4 both looked fake, especially the live action sequences. I thought I was watching a "making of" documentary during the Tumbler sequence through Gotham.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about? I'd prefer to stick with 1080i if my movies are going to look cheap with the double resolution.

its because of the tv settings in the store, not that its interlaced vs. progressive.. or probably because they have Motion Flow on, on the tv's...

That's what I was going to say.

It's the ehancements they have turned on, not the resolution.

I am willing to bet those TVs had 120hz refresh rate on and displaying movies.

I thought ID4 looked fake on my 1080i tv.... I find that the better the PQ the more you can see how cheesey some of the effects are, but not that it looked too real....

All movies are "fake"... Now "cheap" is another story

It depends. Bluray made the first Matrix look almost modern for me.

What on earth are you talking about? The store you went to must truly have a messed up display for you to come away with those thoughts. Or it's got some bizarre motion enhancing crap on it.

Also, 1080p is not double the resolution of 1080i, it has to do with interlacing frames vs. progressively scanning them.

I agree with the other posters, it sounds like they had some sort of frame rate interpolation motion "enhancing" feature turned on that makes movies look like consumer camcorder footage.

I HATE that stuff. If I wanted to watch a soap opera, I'd... I've never wanted to watch a soap opera, so I don't know how to finish that thought.

+1. Had teh same issue at times with the 120Hz on, which is why they recommend having it off for movies.

*EDIT: Motionflow/etc, not 120Hz

yes jsub... the 120 hertz is for the motion blur stuff... they are right. You should definately look into this feature and have it turned off when viewing blu-ray movies. You will see a major difference when this is turned off.

stores gotta catch your attention with something right? as others posted what you saw was definitely store manipulation with the 120hz sets. if you notice stores like bestbuy, all their endcap displays are 120hz LCDs. if you watch there 1 plasma home theater setup you wont see this mess.

Normal TVs have a 60hz refresh rate. In simple terms, its twice the refresh rate which is intended to make motion seem more fluid and smooth. But, with movies which have a 24p, 24 frames per second, it makes it look unnatural. Maybe someone can explain this in a more technical way.

Without getting too technical, all you need to know is that it's the refresh rate of the TV that sometimes has this nauseating effect. A lot of people agree it's best to keep this stuff turned off.
