+1. that's why threads like that exist, but since you're new its understandable you didn't see it. but for future reference and for everyone else who asks "is [insert movie] coming to bluray," look at the release calendar on any bluray/dvd website. if it isn't on there, it likely hasn't been announced yet.....

I would say FG has no future on blu for the foreseeable future. Seth McFarlane said some stuff against HD (mostly aimed at 16:9) in his commentary on the Blue Harvest DVD, basically one of the other participants said something to the like of "Weren't there talks about the special being widescreen?" and McFarlane says that he doesn't believe comedy does well in the widescreen ratio, with the black bars (even though I'm starting to find the big bars on the side of 4:3 on my 16:9 screen very annoying).

I agree. You'd think Seth McFarlane would realize this. Surely he has a widescreen HD TV.

I really do not want to buy anything on DVD anymore. I try to get everything on Blu. Only if it is a killer deal will I buy DVD but I love quaility video.

They need to make a portable, affordable Blu ray player. I know on a small screen the pix quaility probably wont make a difference but it kinda sucks to only be able to watch at home. I cant afford to buy blu ray and DVD versions of the kids movies.

i bet he does have a widescreen hdtv but he probably uses the zoom in on the picture so his Family Guy and American Dad shows cover the whole screen. but if he does make Family Guy and American Dad in aspect ratios of like 1.85.1 or something like that thats a widescreen image with no black bars on widescreen tvs

HD doesn't mean 4:3. They can do 1080p 4:3 just as easily as all of the 2.4:1 films that have been released. The picture on the disc would have the black bars included in the encode, but the final product here is the same: a 4:3 image with black bars on the side.

True, it hasn't happened a lot in BD yet, but as older TV shows start to make the transition, it'll happen more and more. The only 4:3 thing on BD I know of right now is Justice League Season 1.

As far as the topic itself, I'd say it's just a question of when. Once Blu-ray becomes more widespread, more niche items will see BD releases, and it won't be long before people are demanding shows on BD, even older shows. Possibly even shows that would be impossible to get a HD transfer on.

I've already got 5 (I think) volumes of Family Guy on dvd, and I'm pretty happy with them. This isn't something I feel the need to upgrade to Blu-ray.

Just reading this now.
Even though this was old, and Seth must've said that a while ago, we all know he did eventually embrace the 16:9 side... as the recent seasons have filled the 16:9 frame. Does he still think comedy does better at 4:3?

Has anyone done a comparison for how iTunes/Vudu looks on the SD stuff (seasons 1-7) vs. the DVD?

Well, I finally broke down and did it. I bought the DVDs. I believe I now have everything that's easily accessible (i.e. not a retailer exclusive bonus DVD) in terms of Family Guy episodes and extras:

[Show spoiler]

Family Guy is a major guilty pleasure of mine, but I've never owned any of it on DVD before I bought the Blu-ray of the Star Wars parodies earlier this year when it looked like Fox Blu-rays may go out-of-print forever. I'm similarly concerned with these DVDs, but I didn't know that Fox had re-released them in jumbo "Part" packs early last year, each of which contain five volumes and/or seasons from Season 1-14. These "parts" are currently $19.99 each, which I think is a bargain, even though they have cheap packaging. I had a gift card and some certificates to Best Buy, so $121.92 plus tax became $3.34.

Of course, the albatross would be a Blu-ray set with upscaled and HD episodes, but that seems incredibly unlikely to happen even with potential future season sets. My hope is that Disney will one day allow Fox to at least continue to put out DVDs with extras and uncensored episodes, but if not, hopefully I now have everything that did get released, before it potentially vanishes into the digital ether.
