Amazon getting rid of hd dvd movies already?

Number of DVDs that can be purchased today:

As far as i can see there are about 20-25 titles removed which is 10% of all hd dvd titles they have!

This is maybe because of the slow and ever falling sales...

I agree, people are getting a little over-zealous.

TheKnub, I'd just say people are putting the cart before the horse, especially since those are day-to-day graphs. Maybe there are just different distribution times for different studios, that explains the above graphs that only go back to April 4th.

It would be interesting to know what the actual titles are that are no longer available and if so is that permanent or an out of stock scenario.

While I think it's too good to be true, it is interesting that this is the frist time the title count has dropped that much.

If you click the radio buttons below the graph, you can see the entire date range. For the most part it's a continuous increase but during the past few days they've seen a significant drop. I tend to think we'll see it go back up but it's still very interesting.

I agree both formats saw a slight dip in #'s available so I was wondering if some future releases were dropped, but any trend in dropping #'s available can't be ignored.

The thing I really find interesting is that huge difference between the amount of copies on hand for Blu-ray (over 55K) and HD DVD (over 15K). That tells me that Amazon has more faith in the Blu-ray format than HD DVD, so they want to minimize their losses later on.

I don't know about your site but can you really compare your sale figures to that of Amazon?

Good point; Amazon.com is a beast and not many stores can compete with it. However, the graph makes it look way more dramatic than it is, but it's only day to day. If it were month to month, it might be a different story. The trend I see in retail stores, though, is a strong shift toward bluray and away from hddvd.

Some people have to remember that a lot of HD DVD owners buy online and not in physical stores. That doesn't really hold true for Blu-ray owners. My words are re-enforced by Best Buy's, Circuit City's and other major retail store's sales numbers.

It's kind of funny. HD DVD got most of it's following online and it seems that (in the future) HD DVD might go out the same way. The circle of life.

I wonder what Timon and Pumbaa would have to say about that?

Wow..... these stats have a pretty positive look on blu-ray. Looks like blu-ray popularity has risen since January.... must be when people can actually get their hands on that ps3.

I think what people are trying to tell you, is that you're a nobody and that your stats mean absolutely nothing in this format war. We have accurate ways of measuring sales from the net and B&M and we stick to those, as do every studio, CE company and analyst in the world. Thanks for the info tho, im sure someone out there cared!

I don't to seem like we are picking on you...well I'm not. I think you are just misunderstanding what we are trying to say.

It's not like HD DVD was winning the format war up to now. We are just showcasing "the continued decline" of HD DVD. The story every week is near the same sales wise (according to the Nielsen numbers). So, basically your numbers were irrelevant in the face of the large scale real world numbers we have accesss to. That means you point that HD DVD can make a comeback (or something like that) is unfounded. You have no large scale real world numbers to back that thinking up or disprove the decline of HD DVD. That's all we are trying to say.

I would definitely say that's in bad taste. Emotion gets the best of everyone at times. They thought/think you are a HD DVD troll in neutral format clothing, but that doesn't excuse their actions. We get quite a few trolls here, so some people developed offense as their defense. I'm sure this is just an example of miscommunication at it's best.

We should all just forgive each other and move on. There are plenty of real trolls to attack out there!

Good luck with the site and your business. I bookmarked it and will check it from time to time. The US prices are comparable to others I have seen. I am primarily going to rent these formats, not buy for the most part.

I checked out your site and it seems pretty expensive, don't know how many people would pay those prices. And like it was said before you have a pretty new site that probably has very little exposure so how can you really compare to something like amazon?

Don't worry, not all of us fail to look properly. The currency tab was one of the first things I noticed, I changed it to Euros (even though we're in £s over here) and I have to say that your prices seem very reasonable - compared that is to the prices in the UK.

And you're quite right to compare your site to Amazon. Business to business comparison can be conducted if the businesses are the same regardless of quantities sold by the respective companies. You sell the same as Amazon so the fluctuations in demand you encounter will be the same as Amazon.
