Apperantly Blu-Ray will fail because VCR (!!!) is still in!!!

I had some sales guy at at either HG Gregg or Best Buy I can't remember who was telling me reasons why people may not adopt Blu-Ray is because people are still buying loads of VCR PLAYERS! Oh well, huh? It has truely come to my attention that there are literally millions of people in the U.S. who are (financially speaking) are in the lower poverty line who are frankly being left behind by civilization. I don't know if they are the ones buying VCRs or if it's old people or what the deal is. Is something wrong with me?!

From a personal perspective, there's still something to that "old people" perspective. My parents wouldn't even have a DVD player if I hadn't: given one to them, then went to their house and hooked it up for them, then went back a couple times and showed them how it worked again, then instructed them verbally over the phone how to use the DVD player. I hope that sounds as frustrating as the actual experience. Trust me, it was twice as bad when I gave them a computer with internet access. E-mail alone has been paramount to some type of revolution for them. I am currently working on digital pictures with them, and my mother thinks that it is time for the second coming of Christ just because she correctly attached a digital image to an e-mail, ISYN. Back on beginning topic, they still purchase the occasional VHS cassette and recently sought my assistance in purchasing and installing a replacement VCR because the old one went bust. They still have the same TV they had when I was in Jr. High for crying out loud (and we won't discuss how long ago that was). HOWEVER, I would not say this is some huge drawback to the adoption-rate of Blu-ray. My parents may be poor and old, but they really saw the benefit of Blu-ray on my 65" 1080p tv this past week when they came to visit. My mother has a near-drowning incident in her childhood and about sh*t her pants watching "The Guardian" on BR!

Not easily. Even my Blockbuster doesn't have VHS in stock anymore. They disappeared almost two years ago.

I haven't seen a standalone VCR for sale in quite a while - jsut dual VCR/DVD players.

And seeing as how DVD players can often be found for $20, I can't imagine anyone can afford a VCR but not a DVD player.

Standalone VHS, S-VHS, and D-VHS machines went out of production on March 1st 2007 by every company that was still making standalone VHS, S-VHS, and D-VHS machines. The only VHS machines that are being manufactured are cheap combo units bundled with a DVD player and sometimes a TV. What is a shame is no one makes combo S-VHS or D-VHS machines. If manufactories are going to make a few low quality VHS/DVD combo units for a while I wish they would make some HDTV D-VHS machines also but they are not. Since standalone Blu-ray recorders are not going to be released until sometime in 2008 it would have been nice if JVC would have continued to make a D-VHS machines to record 1080I programs on. Until standalone Blu-ray recorders arrive the only other option to record HDTV is on a DVR hard drive which is temp storage for most people. Of course those that own a computer can purchase a Blu-ray recorder for their computer with an ATSC/QAM tuner card.
