Default PS3 not recognizing my external HD

I have my external HD (a Western Digital Mybook 500g) which I formatted to Fat32, connected to my PS3.

However it's not recognizing it. Under the Video tab it just has BD Data Utility and Search for Media Server.

I clicked to search, just on a whim, but it didn't pick up anything.

Why is it not picking this up?

I have a folder on there named PS3 and a subfolder with VIDEO and it's not even showing up.

Can someone help me?

It could be your external HDD doesn't have enough power to be recognized by the PS3, through only the one usb cable.

I use an external case to put the HDD I swapped out from my PS3, and use that as my external HDD. It has a USB cord with two A connectors and one B connector. Both A's need to be plugged in to my PS3, in order to draw enough power for the HDD to run. It's either that or use an external power source.

Could you be having the same problem?

I have it plugged into a surge protector, and it's connected to the PS3 with 1 USB cable.

Did you try....under the media you want to use...music,video, pics....hit the triangle button and then on top right corner of your screen you should see display all...hit that...

It doesn't show up "USB DEVICE" or anything.

When I put in a thumbdrive, USB DEVICE (or something) shows up and I can hit triangle, display all.

But when I have the external plugged in, that USB Device thing doesn't show up.

Just the videos already on there, and then at the top is "BD UTITLITY" or whatever, and "SEARCH MEDIA SERVERS"

um.... put it on your pc, and see if it works.. might need to reformat it..

And I wouldn't name the folder PS3... i would just name it video.. Also could be that the video files are in the wrong codec.

Yes it works on my laptop. I disconnected it from the laptop and took it into the other room and connected it to the PS3.

And it's not that it's not reading the files on the HD, it's not even showing up in the PS3 thing. the HD is not appearing in the ps3 menu.

I had this problem before. Be sure to format fat32 and be sure its the FIRST PARTITION. I had a drive with fat32 and mac hpfs and if the PS3 saw the mac's partition first it would immediately ignore the external drive.

If you are only using one partition verify its indeed the first and there is no stray partitions really there... use a mac or fdisk to be sure.

Silly comment, but have you tried doing a VIDEO folder without it being under the PS3 folder? I don't have my drive in front of me so forgot how I have it set up. I don't remember if I had to do PS3 and then nest MUSIC and VIDEO under it or not.
