Default Need to settle an argument

I currently do not own and hdtv but I still buy blu-rays every chance I get, so that when I do upgrade I will be prepared, I live with someone who has a Sharp 1080p 46" LCD HDTV, that plays the blu's at 1080p, 24hz, at least that what it says, Well the argument is, this kids friend was telling me that blu-ray is for people who dont know what they are talking about, he says it doesnt look any different froma remastered dvd, or upconverted dvd's, he says a DVD and Blu-ray have the same "visual" movie on them just the blu holds more data, He says that the way movies are shot 35mm, or I think he said 75mm film is the reason for the DVD and the BLU looking the same, Im sorry if this doesnt make sense, but I need some EXPERT input i know a good amount but not the technical aspects of everything, any help would be grealty appreciated, thanks

You can and will be able to tell a difference. Once you watch a few Blu's you will never want to watch a dvd, up-converted or not again. I hate watching my dvd's now and only do so if I have no other choice.

I can tell the difference!

I am NOT throwing the baby out with the bath water by catagorically refusing to watch STD Def DVDs now that my library includeds Blu-Ray DVDs. I watch both type & enjoy both type. I'd lose one hell of a lot of titles by refusing to watch Std Def DVDs. To each their own though.

Darko, I'll take all those Std Def DVDs you hate to watch off your hands. It will increase your shelf space.

If the movies are properly transferred to Blu-ray, the difference should be very obvious. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...98#post1335698

As far as film- 35, 75mm or whatever... film typically has a much higher potential for resolution than the limitations of DVD or even blu-ray. DVD is 480, and BD is 1080. However, there have been 8k (as in 8000) resolution scans of film, with technology currently holding us back, not the limitations of film.

Your buddies' friend doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. Film has more headroom than anything currently, and Blu-ray currently makes the most that is capable in the home media environment.

Argument is over!
Blu Ray is simply better over any DVD, upconverted or not.

I wish people the world over would just grow a brain.
I mean that on so many levels, sorry but I'll not elaborate

What would be the best movie to play for him on blu-ray to show him the difference, I own, HULK, TDK, CARS, Bucket List, Step Borthers, Nightmare before Christmas, Horton Hears a who, Tropic Thunder, any of those show a big enough difference to undeniably admit that BLU is KING!?

Show him Cars, he will change his mind pretty quick...

And it definitely is not the same data on both disks. He is just flat out wrong.

+1 That is just the easiest and best way to shut him up, with Cars. If he's still arguing that DVD and BD are the same after that, he's just arguing for the sake of it, you will never make him say different.

Horton Hears a Who has amazing PQ (as do others on your list). If I had to pick from those, I'd pick HHAW personally.

You have to take something else into consideration, Some people simply can't see that well.

Quick story:

A friend of mine had brought over a female friend of his. I wanted to show my friend a clip of Transformer's from my PS3 and to show him how clear HDTV is.

The movie was just showing at the theaters around this time.

The girl stated and swore that she had a copy of the movie and it was just as clear as the clip I downloaded from the PS3 server.

She had a bootleg copy that someone copied with a camera in the theater.

At that point I didn't want to call her stupid, but I figured she was just simply BLIND ! ! !

I think you should just tell your friend that there is a difference, and you feel sorry for him that he can't experince quailty because of his bad vision!

Sounds to me like your friend doesn't have a HDtv and has convinced himself that blu-ray isn't any better cause he's jealous.
