I've come to accept, that nothing is official, until it is official. I'd love to hear from Penton or Paid about this before I pop the champagne. Remember Wal-mart..

Translated it kinda seems that way. Won't believe nothing until we see an official press release or someting.

Hell, HD-DVD supporters don't even know half the time when Universal titles are coming. When do you think us BD supporters will find out when the first Blu-ray title will be released? My guess 2008.

Still as long as the 'signs' keep coming.....

I agree.

No offense to anyone, but I'm really starting to get sicked and tired of these rumor threads with authoritative and declarative thread titles that are completely misleading and false.

In defense of the original poster, his thread title is not overstated rather the media report is strongly worded. His posting it is appropriate. It's the media hype that you have to hate, which is true for all subject matter not just format wars. Howeverthis report at least sticks to what it claims are "facts" rather than most of the HD-DVD hype that is based solely on conjecture.

I agree here, I've mistakenly done that in the past, and it creates much confusion. Adding a simple question mark to the end of this thread title lets us all know it's not confirmed.

By the way, I emailed the links to digitalbits.com, to see if he can find anything on it.

Agreed, I've changed the title to "Universal going neutral?".

Rob voices a legitimate concern but so far, as best I know, Parsons and that BDA side have been fairly clean and devoid of the blatant lies and smearing that we see from the HD-DVD camp on a regular basis.

Just to keep things clear: it was never said that Pioneer or the BDA made such a statement. They just said that some reps from Pioneer mentioned something in a press conference. That's a pretty open statement.

Well, we haven't heard from P-Man for a while, maybe this is what he has been busy with, brokering a deal between the BDA and Universal.

That would be cool!

Yüppie.... if that`s true that's great news... even much earlier than I believed.... for all non german speakers....

"People of Pioneer told the media at a press conference that Universal Home Media cancelled the exclusive agreement with Toshiba.... Till now the cancellation is not guilty (as a reason of time..(sorry for my bad english.. ).... but in the long run Universal will then be able to offer Blu-Ray Discs... Universal got 35,6% of all HD-DVD Sales but only 11 % of all HD Sales... Universal did not comment.... spokespeople of Toshiba declined..."

So long... Hope that`s true...

I won't be holding a party over this announcement until it is confirmed. The above quote says something like: Uni Germany didn't answer the inquiry yet and Toshiba denied that Uni has cancelled their contract.

What really amazes me are the comments on that site: so many people just talking trash without any background info or facts. But I really don't feel like signing up and setting them straight. Let them see the light when the time has come

Here's a translation from a german AVS member:

Universal reportedly leaves HD-DVD camp

In a press conference, spokesmen of Blu-ray supporter Pioneer claimed, that Universal Home Entertainment will cancel the exclusive contract with the HD-DVD camp respectively their biggest hardware company, Toshiba. They said, the contract has already been cancelled, it just didn't come operative yet. If this is true, Universal would be free (on a long term) to publish movies for the competing format Blu-ray Disc, and the HD DVD Promotion Group would lose their only supporter among the Hollywood studios, after Paramount and Warner already left.

At the end of January, Universal affirmed their support for HD DVD and announced 100 releases for the year, and rejected any cooperation with the Blu-ray camp. The exclusive Blu-ray supporters are Fox, Disney and Sony, while Warner and Paramount (including Dreamworks) publish for both formats. The strategy of publishing for both formats could be profitable for Universal: The percentage of the studio at the HD DVD sales between January 1st and March 18th was 35.6%, but only 11.1% of the total HD sales. In the same period, Warner sold 46.4% of the HD DVDs and 19.3% of the BLu-ray Discs, and is #1 in all HD sales with 27.7 percent.

Universal Pictures Germany did not comment this, while Toshiba Germany said, they don't know anything about Universal leaving HD DVD.
Extremely cautious optimism..........

from the translated text: "...and the HD DVD Promotion Group would lose their only supporter among the Hollywood studios, after Paramount and Warner already left"

i don't consider paramount and warner having left hd dvd when they keep shafting bluray on some of their releases. this supposedly came from a pioneer rep? sorry but as much as i wish this rumor was true, i'd say at this point it is no more credible than if i had started it.

Let's all just please stay conserved about this news and not take it as gospel, as HD-DVD supporters did for the false Wal-Mart report. Let's show just how much more mature and intelligent we are and wait for confirmation.

Still, if true, I'm a happy man.
