Credit Card Dispute

Ok, so I work at a retail store and recently we have been receiving a bunch of credit card disputes, we check ids and everything. Purchases are being disputed about a month or 2 later after it was bought, even more. To me this seems fishy since they should have disputed the stuff around the same time since normal people check their credit cards and stuff almost everyday.

Or am I missing something? I never made a dispute ever, do you dispute something and takes the credit card a while for it to reported to the retailer or what?

Whatever I purchase go directly to my card at that time unless it's gas and that takes 2 days. On my debit card that is. But using it as a credit card takes a day

It's just frustrating because I know I check ids, but then managers go say that we don't is annoying, I check ids before they swipe manager ask for id after they swipped and the thing went thru.

If that is truly their policy it is a terrible one and rife for abuse. If a merchant wants to verify signature to protect themselves, I do not see what the big deal is. I would happily show my ID to verify it's truly me making the transaction, but I've maybe been asked three times in years of credit card purchases.

I just can't understand why some people huff and puff when they're asked to verify who they are at the point of purchase, then later on, when they're the victims of credit card fraud, bemoan how easy it is for thieves to rack up cc purchases.

And to the OP, do you know what the consumers are saying when they file their disputes? I've known some cc companies to be very aggressive when it comes to dispute claims.

When should you ask a cardholder for an official government ID? Although Visa

Visa doesn't say you can't ask them for ID, just that they prefer them not to. Whoever wrote that article didn't do a good job of stating it factually. It just says that the merchant can't refuse to accept the purchase with no ID.

It also discusses writing "Ask for ID" on the back of the card, and how the merchant should refuse to accept the credit card until it is properly signed. Wierd rules.

I guess I'm not normal..... I get the bill, stroke a check for a couple hundred more than the total (To get a head-start on next month ) and toss the "evidence"


As far as disputing.... I disputed $2,200 once because an airline didn't honor their refund policy...... I never saw one dime from it.

and as far as checking IDs..... It'd break a forum rule if I took a picture of what I wrote on the signature line on the back of my Best-Buy card..... (I've since canceled it) because those people irritate me so badly when making what I consider "Normal" purchases.

I guess I'm not normal either. I check my charges when the statement comes the following month. If there's a dispute, it's not too late to dispute it. When I have disputed it only takes about 10 days or so for them to come back to you. You then have to fill out some paperwork, send it back to them. So yeah, it could take a little bit of time.

I have disputed a couple of items I had mail-ordered that never showed up. I gave it a couple of months before disputing it because I thought the items might show up. It is possible your business might be the victim of some criminal ring, though chargebacks seems like real penny-ante stuff. Maybe the economy is forcing people to cheat at the edges a little more.

Well my store is in a shady area. It's werid but it's a coorporate store no money lost to me, just manager nagging at you like a girlfriend or wife on her period asking why you spent money on bluray and crap. Well the signatures have to match the receipts and what not so whatever.

And how in the world do you determine that, particularly with electronic pads (which I just scribble on) that you sign? Do you only let folks pay with a credit card that has been signed and then physically compare the signature to the card? Are you qualified to spot forged signatures? Just curious.

Personally, I think you should have to show an ID to use a credit card to prove it is your card. I don't sign mine, I write "ask for ID". That way, unless the crook makes a fake ID to go with your card, you are covered.

How does the store dispute the dispute? Seriously. If you don't have the card-owner on camera making the purchase, then how do you prove the purchase was not made illegally? Do the card companies automatically side with the cardholder?

I've only had on experience with a stolen card. My Visa was never returned to me from a dinner, and I didn't realize it until the next day. I immediately called the bank and every charge made after my dinner was removed from my account. Turns out the waitress stole the card and she and her boyfriend used it to buy dinner later that night, put gas in the car and buy $30 worth of crap at Wal-Mart. I hope it was worth the criminal charges they faced. Idiots.
