i just wanted to know how much would a studio half to spend to make an old catologue movie have reference grade audio or is it even possible to do so especially movies from the 70's,80's, and early 90's.

I don't know how it cost to make, but Baraka is reference grade audio and video and it was filmed in the 80's

probably, but as seen with some movies that originally had a mono mix like Pincohico, I mean they did everything they could to upgrade the sound, I mean it's even 7.1 now, but still, it was recorded mono, but I'm talking about the 40s. Movies made in the 80s-90s can easily have amazing audio.

Many variables come into play with being able to remaster the audio from an older movie with levels of quality comparable to what is produced today.
If the original magnetic master tapes are in great shape then it's certainly possible to make a movie 20 or 30 years old sound fantastic. Not every master tape is stored in environmentally controlled vaults unfortunately. The outcome also depends on what levels of professionalism and quality were used in creating the original audio tracks. Dolby noise reduction has existed for movie production and presentation since the early 1970s. Star Wars is arguably the watershed moment in film history where modern, high quality multichannel surround sound was born. Since 1976, when the first mag-coated 70mm prints with Dolby NR were distributed, various incremental steps have been made. Analog audio quality reached its peak in the late 1980s with technologies like Dolby SR extending head room and lowering noise floors well beyond what 16-bit digital audio could produce. Some of these kinds of tapes can and have been used in creating 24-bit 96kHz digital audio tracks. Quote:
