My parents have DirecTV and the only complaint that I have heard is that the hockey games that are in HD are only in 4X3 ratio not 16X9 like it should be.

I've seen hockey games in 16x9, hd. I've seen more standard def broadcast games than I have hd games though.

Dish Network

They just upgraded my 721 SD DVR to a 625 SD DVR because they claim they moved from the 148 Sat to the 118 I believe for the international programming. I argued about NOT paying the DVR fee because my purchased 721 didn't require a fee.

An SD receiver is all I need because the 5 channels I pay for only come in SD.
There's a better selection for these international channels on Dish Network.

Brazil Elite Pack
$44.99 month

We really only watch 3 of them
TV Globo International
RBTI
Record International

Sergio, you can visit satelliteguys forum and read up on the differences. Personally I have Dish, and they are in the process of adding the HD channels that DirecTv has over them. Dish has the best DVR's, even admitted by some DirecTv subs. My parents, grandparents and sister all have DirecTv, and I can't see any difference in PQ, and I do notice that stuff!

For the most hi-def channels go with direct tv. Great programming options and good customer service. (In my experience)

I've had both and like DirectTV better esp when it comes to HD. They own more HD satellites or something and there is rarely if ever any artifacting or noticable compression on my 55" Sony

With DISH HD you could always see the compression. It was like you are watching DVD quality content where with DIRECTTV it is far better. Its not Blu quality but the HD stuff looks better than DVD quality

It also depends on location

but I wouldn't take the fact that DirectTV owns and uses more HD satellites with a Grain of Salt.

By doing that they are able to provide more bandwidth out per channel. I got into it deep with Dish Network when I was with them on their "Charlie Chat" show where you get to talk to the Execs on air and they admitted they have no choice but to share bandwidth and it was spread thin at the time across what they had access to. This meant they would need to compress HD content more than they wanted to. It was still better than SD content but all they could do with what they had.

Switched to DirectTV and the difference was just night and day with HD.
Be prepared to pay more for it though.

I remember the whole reason we switched was because USANetwork & Sci-Fi looked like complete crap on DISH. DISH came to our house about 10 times in two months and had no explanation other than compression was too high and looked bad for our TV. This was their official explanation. Two techs even said certain HD channels looked better from other providers
