ONKYO TX-SR606 & TV speakers

Ok, I have a few questions. I just hooked up my ONKYO TX-SR606. Have it hooked up to 2 front speakers, going to finish the 5.1 setup maybe by Fri.
1- When I do the 5.1 hookup, and if I only want to listen to the AM/FM Stereo tuner, does the 606 turn the front speakers on and shut the rest of the speakers off, or do I have to ?
2- I also have a 46' Samsung, bluray DVD player and a cable box. For now I just want the surround sound for watching movies on the DVD. If I want to watch cable TV and listen with the TV speakers, is there anything special I have to do. If I just turn on the TV w/o the 606, will I get sound from TV speakers ?

From what I can tell you can hook up the cable box to the Onkyo 606 with a HDMI cable, then connect a HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV. Make sure to set the Audio TV Out setting to ON so you can listen to the cable box audio through the TV speakers. That setting is in Setup / 7. Hardware / 5. HDMI. Only problem is that it seems you may not be able to use the speakers connected to the receiver...only the TV speakers. That may be unwanted if you want to use the speakers for Blu-ray viewing.

You might want to try using component cables for the cable box. Hook up the video cables to Component In 2 and the audio cables into the CBL/SAT Audio In. Use the Component Out and the Audio Out beneath it to connect to the TV. See if that works. That way you might be able to get audio out of your TV and the receiver speakers...you would just mute the receiver speakers whenever using the cable box.

As far as the AM/FM Stereo Tuner you can set how the audio is output. Use the listening presets and decide what suit you best. Direct or stereo will output over the front left and right speakers and subwoofer, while AllChStereo, Full Mono, Neo:6 Music, and Dolby PLIIx Music output the radio over 5.1 setups.

Thanks for the fast reply. I have the manual, and in the process of reading it, but I didnt get the far into it. If I just connect the cable box to the TV with HDMI, do you think this will work ? I still will hookup the Blu-ray to the 606 for movies.

Don't have that reciever but the way I did it on my old set up was to hook the cable box up to the tv via component and then just in case I wanted surround for a movie on tv, ran an optical line from the box to the reciever. Everything else (PS3, Xbox 360) went to the reciever via hdmi and out to my tv via hdmi.

Do you think this will work: hook the cable box up to the TV with HDMI (so I dont have to turn on the receiver to watch TV), than also run component & optical from cable box to receiver ( for surround for a movie on tv). Then of course I will hook the Bluray to receiver .

That will work. Then you will switch inputs on the TV to choose either cable box or Blu-ray. And if you want to watch a movie on TV just turn on the receiver.

If I use this splitter, http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2, Video/Audio Splitter - HDMI M to HDMI F X 2, do you think it will work. Male to cable box, 1 Female to receiver and 1 to TV with HDMI. If I want to watch TV w/o the receiver, I will get sound out of the TV speakers.

Here is my suggestion. Connect the Blu-ray and cable box to the receiver with HDMI cables. Use one HDMI cable to connect the receiver to the TV. Then use the listening mode to set the cable box to Stereo. That way the cable box sound will play over your front receiver speakers. This way if you want to watch regular TV it will only output Stereo...plus the speakers are probably much better than TV speakers. You can also setup surround sound for the cable box for TV movie viewing with the listening modes.

If you would like to play the cable box audio over the TV speakers, then hook the cable box up to the receiver with component video cables. Connect the two audio cables from the cable box to the back of the TV. Just like Afflicted suggested, use an optical cable to the receiver for TV movies.

You might be able to use an HDMI cable for the cable box and set the TV Audio Out setting to on. Then it would output the cable box audio the the TV with the HDMI output. Only problem is it might also do this with your Blu-ray audio, which you don't want. I would suggest my first proposed setup in this post.

I just edited it. I read through the manual and realized that many of my suggestions did not apply to the 606. I have the 605, same receiver minus some rearranged settings and one less HDMI input. I edited my response to apply to the 606.
