Exclamation Need some advice on a situation..Please read

Okay heres the deal. I go to a community college. In my speech communications class, the teacher says and does things that I dont think is right for a school setting and keep in mind that this all this happens during class.

First thing: She takes phone calls and text messages during class and does not excuse herself from the room. We (the students) hear everything. One day she was calling two different people, a contractor and a carpet company. She was asking for quotes and such. She is actually doing business during our school time.

Second: This past Wed. she asked the students if they know a family member who has recently lost their job. People raised their hands, myself included. She then pasted out business cards with her home address for a 'party' type event which she will be holding. The card describes her business with a skin care company. My teacher's job title is an independent consultant district manager. On the back of the business card gives the company's mission goal of sorts; which states, ********* International has something for everyone.... generous compensation plan, online training and committed leadership. Now's the time to be a part of ******* ( I will not list the name of the company for obvious reasons) She then asked the class who has a Facebook profile. So whats she is doing is marketing the students, DURING CLASS TIME. We did nothing that day, except listen to what she said.

There are many more little things such as how she digresses constantly and sometimes it never relates to the subject of conversation.

What I am asking is, should I say something to the dean of the school or leave it alone for my own good?
I dont feel that what she is doing is right. But I dont want anything to backfire on me. Can you guys give me some advice on what to do in this situation?
Thanks
-PacVibes

Report her....that's unprofessional. You're spending your money to be there to learn, not to hear marketing schemes or how someone makes appointments.

Go to the Admissions office and ask for them to give you a discount on that class. If you're not learning, you shouldn't be spending.

i always recommend if you have an issue with a teacher/professor you talk to them about it first, even if it's a difficult thing to approach them about....edit: nevermind, screw that...on one hand id just say F it and sit back and enjoy not having to do actual school work, but on the other, if you're paying for school, you should be getting just that. i had a teacher in college who used to call and text in class all the time and i thought that was hilarious (he didn't do it that often though). self promoting in class isn't at all appropriate though...

I thought about asking for a discount or refund for the class.

Yeah, she markets herself all the time. She tells us all about her jobs and what she does. Its not right.

OH CRAP...one day she even said if anyone is interested, stay after class.

I say report her as if you try to speak with her, it could negatively impact your grades specifically. The reason I say this is that, its hard to judge whether or not she'd take your critique professionally as shes already acting without common sense and unprofessional.

Its her job to be teaching you, not trying to sell you something non-school related.

yeah i was thinking that too...it might cause more problems instead of solving them and you surely don't want that. pv, i think you should go talk to someone in your headmasters office and see what they recommend.

Don't they hand out a teacher evaluation at the end of the year?

I would make it explicit as well as other classmates should (if you talk with them) that this teacher is completely unprofessional and cares more about herself than her students...

That is terrible. I mean it's one thing when a professor is so boring that you want to cry, it's another when they're pedaling some company of theirs on you and your family.

What school is this?

It's getting to the end of the semester, so I could wait to the teacher evals. Of course, if your school doesn't have them, then definitely report her to her superiors. But numbers matter. Get a petition of other students in your class together to make sure your voice is heard.

Good luck.

if you're not satisfied with the way she teach her class then report her to the dean but be sure to have proof of bad conduct on her part to back up your claim or go to the dean as part of a group of dissatisfied student because if you go alone with no proof it may end up being her word against yours and since she's a teacher with more authority than you....it might become a problem down the line.... good luck

The closest experience to this I have is this religion teacher I had back when I was at school, actually giving us sex ed stuff in a very crude language. But nobody would report him cause we (teens back then) liked this way better than actual boring religion.
