Contrast Ratio - static v dynamic - Blu-ray Forum

Whats the difference between static contrast ratio and dynamic contrast ratio? I saw a tv advertised at 20,000:1 contrast ratio, but when I looked in to it its static contrast ratio was only 1000:1.

What should one look out for? I know the higher the ratio the better the picture quality, but is the above example, what is the ratio that REALLY matters?!

Dynamic is basically useless. What dynamic does is raise or reduce your contrast level during different brightness in scenes. For example during a dark scene say The Dark Knight the contrast would be dropped to make the image appear to be darker and have more inkier blacks but actually crushes detail. And during a birhgt scene such as the opening bank robbery the contrast would go up to make the image brighter.
