Hello!
![]() Just wanted to get everyone's opinion on dynamic contrast ratio's. Do you feel dynamic contrast improves your picture or makes it worse? Once calibrated do you have it turned on or off? Is the dynamic contrast ratio something you take into consideration when making a purchase or do you believe it to be a marketing thing? Feel free to share your opinions! On my set ( A sammy series 6) I have it turned off as I feel it make the image look unnatural. Greetz! |

685's but it's actually just the advertisement pic from B&W, found it to be much more representative than my own crappy camera shots...

dynamic contrast ratios really don't mean anything, they are essentially just 5-10x exaggerations of true contrast ratios to make specs seem more impressive. unfortunately there is no standard for measuring true contrast ratios either, but at least they have a better indication of a TV's performance.
when purchasing, you can essentially ignore DCR. if you can find TCR then great, but still take it with a grain of salt when comparing across different brands. if your TV has the option to turn dynamic contrast on/off then it's up to you to try it out determine what you like best. |

Dynamic contrast ratio is NOT a setting. It is the difference between an all white screen and an all black screen, and is used as marketing hype to make LCD displays sound good versus Plasma ANSI contrast numbers. Please read the following article to understand better.

if you don't believe me, don't take my word for it (as someone trained in image orthorectification and interpretation), take viewsonic's: original image: ![]() with DC applied: ![]() source that graph in the corner is called an image histogram, as you can see it has been manipulated, resulting in a 'cleaner' picture. |

^^ Branden - I believe we are both right, though talking about different uses of the term "dynamic contrast ratio". I have no reason to doubt what you are saying is correct in the context you are using it. I've never heard it used like that before, but that doesn't mean anything.
![]() As it applies to consumer TV's, the term means what I described above and in the article linked. The simple use of the term "ratio" implies one is comparing something to something else. In this case, an all black screen compared to an all white screen is defined as dynamic CR. Since big numbers tend to attract the uninformed consumer, most LCD manufacturers quote this value, though it means next to nothing in terms of the true contrast ratio (ANSI contrast ratio) of the set where white and black are both displayed at the same time and the light output from each is compared. Anyway, thanks for the education in the other use of the term. Like I said earlier, I was not aware of that. |
