Default The Samsung BDP1600 Review Thread

Good Morning,

I need a new Blu-ray player and I noticed in the Best Buy ad this morning that the Samsung BDP1600 is on sale for $249.99. Can anyone tell me if this is a quality player. I am planning on hooking it up to a Samsung LN46A750 via HDMI. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'd buy it. I have 2 BD-P1500 that work just fine.

FYI, walmart has the optional BD-P1590 for $248. It is the same specs as the 1600 but does not have the flip down door which many do no like.

The guys over at CNET really like it, ranking only the Samsung 4600, 3600 and PS3 above it. I own a PS3, but if it crapped out today I would buy the 1600. The only drawback of that model is if you can't connect to the internet via ethernet, as I can't, you have to spend another $80 on a WiFi dongle. The $250 price you mention is the lowest I've seen on that player.

Angry Don't Do the Firmware Update!

I allowed them to do the firmware update (which took around 20 minutes) for the Samsung BD-P1600 and then when turning it on after the update it asked for which language I wanted; 1 for English, 2 for Spanish, etc. I entered 1 and it just sat there doing nothing. Finally I unplugged the ethernet line and re-connected it and it went to the main menu. I selected Netflix and then selected a TV show I had in my queue. It took forever to "retrieve" and then when I started playing it, it stopped every 4 or 5 minutes. It became totally unwatchable. I called Samsung and they basically told me I'm stuck, you can't undo the update and they don't have a new one. Has anyone else experienced this??

Well... in Australia, at least there is officially no firmware update for the BD-P1600. Not via the support agents nor as per OEM supplied info, nor from direct-internet connection from the player itself.

If it's any help the version the unit was shipped with for Australia is:

S/W: BEV1.00_090327A-XSA
Loader: LDv1.02_090327
Region: B/4 (BD/DVD)

Default Subtitles

Is anyone using this unit with subtitles?
I'm on my second BD-P1600 and and am about ready to return it to BB.
I have a hearing problem and need the subtitles.
I haven't played any Blu Ray movies yet, just regular DVDs.
With the second one, when the DVD Layer Change takes place, I lose the subtitles and have to reset it.
There seems to be three ways to set the subtitles, the Subtitles Button, through the Info Button, and also the Menu Button. None of them are 100% reliable when resetting.
And if you read the instructions on page 36, I read it as saying, that once the subtitle language is chosen, it should stay that way each time i play a new movie. In other words: Set it and forget it. This isn't what's happening. Every time I start a new movie, I have to set the subtitle.

**deceptive and misleading advertising**

mmmmm.... I just bought a BD-P1600 in Australia. Not happy about the whole "... This unit is compatible with Samsung's WLAN Adaptor *only* (not included) (WIS09ABGN)" thing...

What really sux is that I was pretty much duped. Yes, tricked. Ripped off.

I had the wool pulled over my eyes by **deceptive and misleading advertising** on Samsung's part.

You see the box / packaging info states [1] Icon / graphic on top, sides, and one end [2] "Blu-ray Disc Player" Product Feature Bullet point #3 of 4: "Wireless LAN Ready (Wireless LAN Adaptor required)."

However what it fails to state is the quote at the top of my comment, one word totally changes the meaning "only" [the WIS09ABGN]. This specific info is only contained in the manual and not on the box. I mean who reads the manual in the show room [maybe I will from now on].

The deal maker for me was the 'USB WLAN ready' feature, & I was planning to use a spare one I have at home.

The WIS09ABGN retails for over AUD90 in Oz.

Not happy Samsung you tricked me with deceptive and misleading advertising and the and the Australian Consumer & Competition Commission says that there is a case to be answered!

Put that in your pipe and smoke it Samsung you are a fair dinkum bunch of dirty rotten scoundrels.

Just watch out if you are buying Samsung BD-P1600 you must buy the SAMSUNG WIS09ABGN USB WiFi adaptor - the on-box advertising is misleading and suggests that a third party Wireless USB LAN adapter will work.

So add the cost of one of those to your budget [AUD$90] if wireless LAN is a deal maker!

Can the P1600's firmware be updated by usb? Not wireless or wifi. Is my only way instead of wireless, update via CD?

Default SAMSUNG PLayers Have an imortant Solution

This is what i found in the thread of Samsung BD-P1590,I want to help and i hope i can more than that but i dont Have a samung player only Panasonic and PS3.

"If this works I will let everyone know. Check out this little blurb from Samsungs website.

FIRMWARE UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE FOR 2009 BLU-RAY PLAYERS INCLUDING BD-P1590, BD-P1600, BD-P3600 AND BD-P4600.
**PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY**
When updating the firmware on the above models for the first time, YOU MUST install the firmware twice:

if the version on the player is earlier than BEv1.03 and
if updating by CD or USB only.
Network updates will only be required once.

Firmware versions earlier than BEv1.03 (ex. BEv1.02, BEv1.0) will NOT detect the loader firmware that is embedded/included in the actual firmware update.

This has been corrected in version BEv1.14 (4600) and BEv1.03 (All other models). However, you must install the new version BEv1.14 (1.03) twice. The second update will properly detect and install the loader update. If the loader update is not correctly installed, the loader may malfunction and discs may not be read.

Future updates will only need to be done once and any update method is possible. To obtain the firmware and complete instructions, click here to visit the Download Center. "

So it's better to visit Samsung site and see for possible solution always...

Default Help with MKV Samsung BD-P1600

The reason I purchased the BDP1600 over other models was that it was suppose to play MKVs, so I updated to 2.02 (Canada firmware).
I see YOUTUBE now at start up. And it says that I am at 2.02_XAC in the System Info, but it does NOT play MKVs. I CAN play AVCHD without any problems.

1) How do I play MKV files?

Also, I cannot play region 2 DVD movies on this region 1 player. I tried Powering off/then on. I then opened then closed tray after the BR player was all booted. I then pressed REPEAT followed by (R1 code) 29334. Nothing happens. The Number '1' doesn't show up, so I can't press 9 to make it region free.

2) How do I make it Region Free?

I have don everything possible to play mkv files and I've had no luck with it. I've put them into a flash drive and it can't play it. I burned it into a dvd-r and a file and it can't play it. I burned it as Iso file and it still can't play it. I've called Samsung but they didn't seem to have much knowledge with mkv and the most some one told me was to burn it as an iso file but that was of no use. I'm just guessing support for it wasn't added this round because I can't figure out. Or unless the mkv file has to have a specific setting or resolution, but they haven't made it known yet.

This player isn't region free so the only way you can remove the region code would be to use a program like DVDFAB and make a back up copy on another dvd. It will remove all restriction on your dvd.
