Default PS3 will decode someday DVD-Audio ?

I am very interested to know if PS3 is capable to decode DVD-Audio.
I mean in a future firmware upgrade, of course.
If it's a limitation of hardware, I understand not will be possible.
I would be grateful if somebody illuminates me.
Thanks.

I think it's unlikely it ever will. DVD-A is a rival format to Sony's own SACD format. While I am sure the PS3 is perfectly well equiped to do it with just a few firmware tweeks, I wouldn't hold my breath.

PS-3 does not play DVD-A. It plays the Dolby Digital 5.1 layer @ 48khz sampling rate.

You need a DVD-A player to play a DVD-A's, 96khz/24 layer.

Per my understanding DVD-A uses a different laser frequency (very much like CD & SACD), thus the PS3 might not even be equipped to play a DVD-A disc.

According your point of view is not a technical issue, is political.
I understand. Probably your are right.
But, IMHO, between SACD and DVD-Audio is not a war that could bring a winner (like BD and DVD-HD), I think both, in some way, are lost this battle. Therefore, Sony could be a little generous, and make an effort towards his costumers that own some discs on both formats, like me.

OK, you are very radical about this, I respect your opinion.
Probably you know better than I the disposition of the guys of Sony.
But, if it is technically possible (I am not sure about this), I don't want to loose my hope for the moment.
Things change, sometimes...
A months ago, some people said that ps3 will never decode DTS MA...

DTS MA is different and that was people being misinformed.

What you are talking about is almost the equivelent of saying: Well, now that HD-DVD lost I wonder if sony will make the PS3 play that format. Technicalities withstanding, DVD-Audio and SACD to sony are like HD-DVD and BD were.
Being that both SACD and DVD-Audio are ultra niche formats any longer (love em both and own both) I don't forsee Sony ever throwing a bone to the people who bought the competition to their SACD format.

If you want a decent SACD/DVD-Audo player, check out the OPPO products. I have a 980 and love it for pretty much only my DVD-Audio and SACD discs. It's so pretty seeing DSD on the onkyo 606 display when I put in an SACD!

I am not radical about anything. This would be like asking Toshiba to make a Blu-ray player

I could see Toshiba making a BD player long before the PS3 plays the Advanced Resolution tracks from the DVD-Audio discs.

Default laser

If the laser can read a DVD-V disc it can read DVD-A if a suitable software player is present to decode it.

First, I would not offend you about the expression been radical. If I did I apologize.
Second, In the matter of Toshiba and Blu-Ray, I think that in the business world (where the only thing that matters is make money) we have seen very odd things.
I will not put my hands on the fire about this.

Toshiba will make a Blu-ray player, it's only a matter of time... Sony probably will NEVER make a DVD Audio player, or even enable the function on the PS3. speaking stricly about technical issue, the 40GB version most likely is incapable of playing DVD-A as it cannot play SACD.

1. The difference between Dolby Digital and DVD-A is not only sampling frequency and sample size. DVD-A uses lossless audio and DD is a lossy codec.

2. On DVD-A, the music is stored on the disc in Linear PCM format, which is either uncompressed or losslessly compressed with Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP). The maximum permissible total bitrate is 9.6 Megabits per second. Channel/resolution combinations that would exceed this need to be compressed. In uncompressed modes, it is possible to get up to 96/16 or 48/24 in 5.1, and 192/24 in stereo. To store 5.1 tracks in 88.2/20, 88.2/24, 96/20 or 96/24 MLP encoding is mandatory.

3. SACD was more successful that DVD-A and Sony has pretty much abandoned SACD. I do not believe they care much about DVD-A at this point.

4. The closest audio codec to DVD-A is Dolby TrueHD. MLP is licensed by Dolby Laboratories and Dolby TrueHD uses MLP. You can say that DVD-A and Dolby TrueHD are close cousins.

5. My hope is that many studios will eventually release new music titles on Blu-ray in LPCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS HD Master Audio.

For additional information, read A Guide to DVD-A, A Guide to SACD, and A Guide to Home Theater Audio CODECs.

According Big Daddy said, I think would be technically easy that ps3 could decode DVD-A through a firmware update.
Don't you think that would be superior the benefits to do so than the opposite?
Would be a new improvement of PS3 over the rivals.
At this point, since the emergence of BD, I think both SACD and DVD-A are at the gates to be obsolete.
What Sony could loose making so?
