Default Can you rent Blu-rays in your area?

I live in west Texas, US, and I was wondering if BD's are available to rent in civilization? I can use Netflix, but that's my only option. Buying everything I want to see is getting VERY $$$. I was just wondering about selections, availability, etc. Thanks!

None to rent where I live. I live in Heanor, Derbyshire, United Kingdom. I can't even find anywhere to buy them, only online.

Yes, Blockbuster here has them to rent and buy, though not all titles, e.g. I'd like to rent the recent releases Music & Lyrics and The Fountain, but they don't have either of them.

Not in NE PA. My Blockbuster was supposed to rent BLU RAY/HD DVD at one time but decided against it. When I asked why they (blockbuster) said the demand in my area was too small.

Reminds me of when CD's first arrived.

So I subscribe to NetFlix

At least in 2 locations in Calgary, Canada. Westhills Blockbuster and Mount Royal (17th Ave.) Blockbuster. I imagine, most if not all major US and Canadian metropolitan cities will have at least 2 Blockbuster locations from which to rent Blu-ray discs.

I live in the smallest Province in Canada (PEI) and I've noticed at least one video store is renting Blu-ray. They've started this in the last five months. Because I was calling around back in January, after I got my PS3, and no one was renting them at that time.

Not in my town, Madison, no rent. Limit number of High Definition (Blu-ray) at Wal-mart and Gamestop in Madison, Alabama. In Huntsville, 20 minutes from here, there are Best Buy and MovieStop with most High Definition movies on sale where I can buy. Another place do have few selections of these movies at Wal-Mart and Targets and mild-selections at Circuit City in Huntsville, Alabama. None are rentals.

Cool

Nowhere to rent here. My local Walmart is the only place to buy too, so I have to drive an hour and a half to get a really great selection of bluray titles for sale. So Amazon and I have been getting to know each other quite well lately.

I have the thingy where they mail me movies. I tried to get them to send me Blu-ray movies...I select the blu-rays from their blu-ray section, but only regular DVDs come. And I'm too lazy/apathetic to call them & find out why so I just buy them.

I live in Vancouver, Canada. I have an online, mail-in store Zip.ca that has a nice catalogue of Blu-ray titles. Service works very well. I'd have to guess that the US has a similar mail service (maybe even Blockbuster?). As for the UK, Asia / Pac Rim countries, surely there has to be something similar. If not, there's your new business idea right there. "Blu-ray Online". Again, check out Zip in the attached link. Works very well for me.

http://www.zip.ca/MyAccount/index.aspx

Check out the Zip Hot Zone in the right nav. and click on "Blu-ray"...

There you go my friends south of the border:

https://www.blockbuster.com/signup/s/howItWorks

And yes, by the looks of it, you can get Blu-rays!

http://www.blockbuster.com/help/faq/687

http://www.blockbuster.com/browse/co...s/brDvdPackage

I'm sure the Blockbuster offering will work well.

I'm thinking this is another great way to support Blu-ray if you can't afford to buy all the titles. Don't think for a moment that companies like Blockbuster couldn't be a major tipping point in favour of Blu-ray!!

I've seen them at the front of the Blockbuster counters for sale and at netflix.

The reason you probably aren't seeing too many stores carrying rentals is currently none of the studios are selling rental types to the distributors.

Normally when a title comes out i.e. Ghost Rider - the distributors also sell them in rental format as well with the special cases etc. So far none of the studios have opted to sell any titles in rental format to any of the distributors.

So the companies that are renting them out Blockbuster, Netflix are just buying the dvds-taking them apart and putting them into their own rental cases.

Cool

Sorry for the repeat post, but ya gotta love the descriptions posted on Blockbuster's site:

HD: "'high definition digital versatile disks". This new, high-capacity format is capable of playing and storing high-definition images--up to five times the amount of data and detail that can be stored on a standard DVD. This means HD discs feature higher definition video and audio, as well as advanced interactive features. As soon as high definition movies are released, BLOCKBUSTER will make them available to our subscribers. The very first HD DVDs were available on our site April 18, 2006.

Blu-RayTM: the highest of the HD resolutions. Its new, high-capacity format is capable of playing and storing high-definition images up to five times the amount of data and detail that can be stored on a standard DVD. This means Blu-rayTM DVDs feature higher definition video and audio, as well as advanced interactive features.

...And I quote: "the highest of the HD resolutions".... oh yeah baby, gotta love those key words used here: "highest" and "higher". Now that's not an insignificant 3rd party endorsement for Blu-Ray. For the masses still using DVD, those key words used to describe Blu-ray are frickin' powerful.

Just rented 3 yesterday at Willow video in Langley(suburb of Vancouver). It was $3.95 each but only a one day rental. The Omen looked alot better than the 3.5 stars HD Digest gave it. Pearl Harbour also looked great, Movie that surprised me the most was The Searchers, as old as I am. Picture was stupendous. I had never seen that movie before and I did have it in my hand today but opted for Enemy of the State and Mission Impossible 3. Bought both at Walmart.

nice to see a fellow Canuck on the boards. And sporting the PSB speakers too - those are some slick Canadian goods, ...eh? I'm over in New West so a little too far to hit that store. Try Zip.ca. Seriously, I find it a huge time saver and they have a very decent Blu-ray collection. You have to wait for some stuff on your Zip list, but other titles, including new releases, seem to cruise to your mailbox in a couple days... Wish we had this blockbuster service though -- it appears as though they have all the Blu-ray titles, and very likely more in stock...
